Wally enjoys his obedience so much I would love to show him in some recognized shows so that he could be titled. Problem is, there are not as many options here as there are in the US. There is 1 mixed breed registry in Canada, but it's too far away to be able to make their accredited matches anyway.
SO the only real option is the Canadian Kennel Club. They will only register purebreds. He could get a performance number, if he could pass as an ugly specimen of a pure breed. I know other people do it... photos are submitted with the application and the application is rejected if the photos do not match breed type, even though the dog is neutered.
What do you think?
For the registration photos, I could clip his neck, legs and tail closely and try to pass him off as a brindle pug.
I could also say he's a really short haired shih tzu.
Some people have mistaken him for a brussels griffon. Take a look at the middle pic on this site:

He also fits the description of an affenpinscher.
Or does he just look too Pugzu to pull off convincingly??

What a shame they won't let mixed breeds in the non-conformation activities. Here anything without a registered pedigree is listed as an "Associate" and can be a non-pedigreed pure bred or a mix of any type - only restriction is that it must be neutered if Associate.
Google seems to show me that that Canadian Kennel Club doesn't accept brindle as a Pug colour anyway (I happen to agree, but that doesn't help here). nor do I believe that they would accept brindle as a Griffon Colour (although their link to the standard was down) and anyway he is way too big to be a griffon even a really badly bred one. The closely related Affenpinscher doesn't come in brindle either and is even smaller than the griff.
So you need to find a breed that could produce a small wire-haired brindle with a flat face and drop ears. I can't think of any off hand, most of the small terriers that come with brindle options have pointy muzzles and prick ears. The Norfolk may be a possibility.
There are a couple of smooth bull breeds he could maybe pass for - Boston Terrier, French Bulldog( with 'bad' ears) if you shaved all his coat including his face down to smooth.
Most of the bichon type breeds with shortish muzzles that come in brindle (Havanese, Shih Tzu, Llasa Apso, Lowchen) have long silky hair that even when clipped short just doesn't look wiry. If you could arrange a silky look in a photo, then try for a pet clip Lowchen - you would have to say he was having a bad hair day when entered lol!
I couldn't find a pic of a brindle Lowchen in pet clip - there are plenty all over the net in show clip, the body morph is about right for Wally.
Here is a pic of a Norfolk Terrier, grizzle with black points, which is probably the next closest thing if you can't get a silky Lowchen look for "that" photo.
I guess the CKC is trying to force you to choose a pure bred for titile competition? Very stupid and non-productive, in my view. Little wonder that others are bending the rules to get their non-purebreds in.

I have no suggestions, but I really hope you figure something out!

You are not showing him as a pug, one would think that registering your handsome boy would be easy![]()

Have you talked to anyone in obedience in Canada??? They might know of a way to do it...or a club that would allow it!
I just love Wally, wish I could snuggle with him.

I'm going to speak to our trainer, actually maybe I'll send her an email. She's an obedience judge, so if there's a way, she'll know how. She would also know if the CKC is considering changing that idiotic rule any time soon. I understand that the CKC wants to promote purebreds, but you would think that they would also want to promote high level training and competition of ANY dog, and if they're neutered, what's the harm in giving them a competition number?!? I think I'll keep the tibetan spaniel in my pocket for when we discuss ways to make this work. Otherwise, I;ll just enter him in fun matches, and move him up when he's ready, and just know myself what a great dog he is!!
