Onion went to Agility Training tonight!!
We just went to have a look and see how she would cope with the idea. Given that her eyesight is not good after her extensive trauma and surgeries, I thought it would be a good move to get her to really trust me "blindly" about where to step etc so that we are ready for it when she loses her sight altogether.
She was a little STAR! I was so proud of her! She was not keen on the weird dirt stuff on the floor (It's an equestrian centre) but she got used to it quite quickly. She went UNDER the pole jump to start with - which was just good sense really when you think about it. As soon as she twigged what was required, she was hopping over like a champ!
We took her over the bridge thing and she kinda crept along it, a bit uncertain of her step, but she followed my voice and her tail was up the whole time. To the trainer's amazement - as soon as she got the the bottom of this thing, she turned straight round and went up again on her own, she could not get enough! Lol!
I think she will be a natural! She liked the look of the tunnel, but when it came to having a go she said no thank you, so we left that alone.
The proper training intro course starts in a couple of weeks and we are all signed up!
Everyone seems friendly but my goodness - I have never seen such a bunch of badly behaved big dogs! We were lunged at 3 times! Hackles up all over the place! I have been spoiled, going to all those pug meets where there is never a cross word. It was quite a shock. Good job Onion is pretty shock proof!
Almandine and the gang - George, Dannika, Darwishi (Wish) and Pickle.... and who knows.... maybe a new little boy too...
Samson, Treacle, Maisie and the beautiful Onion at the Bridge. In our hearts forever.
Hooray for onion!! I'm glad she took to it so well.Maybe I should look into something like that for Mack. He needs something to expel his puppy energy on besides attacking me!

What a great idea, Almandine. I love that you're already thinking about how to help her make the transition, if it ever comes to that. And I love that she went under the bar at first. I mean, why expend the energy to jump when you can crawl?
It just breaks my heart, but we had to give up agility. Lemon *adored* 80% of it -- she's a natural at jumps and weaves, but the dogwalk and teeter just weren't happening. They distressed her to the point that they were ruining the fun for her.

Almandine--Lola says to tell Onion to get over the tunnel thing since they are the best. She particularly likes them cause when you get tired of performing you can run into the tunnel and lie down right in the middle for a nap. Then everyone has to figure out how to get you to come out which often leads to treats that you don't really deserve!!
Way to go OnionCan't wait for progress reports
