I'm sorry you didn't qualify but it sounds like you have taken it the right way. Well done for coping with it all so well - it must be so hard when the dog stops dead.
I've done a few of the movements with Snifter in the past, so I know just how hard it is and how many treats it takes. You'll have to invent a cane with a secret treat dispenser at the bottom and hope nobody notices!

Even though it didn't turn out as planned you guys are so amazing. To have accomplished what you have with him is beyond anything I could ever dream of. I can barely get mine to sit.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks everyone for all the support and encouragement. It was a little disappointing to not qualify on Sunday because it would have been our title, but mostly I felt like I had let Wonka down in some way with not training/preparing him enough. And then, talking to that grumpy judge late in the day made me a little upset... the 'nice judge' (the one I liked) said to me at one point "well, you're working with a non-traditional breed and that right there is something!" and the 'grumpy judge' quickly blurted out: "oh, I've seen dogs of every breed doing freestyle. It's not about the breed." Later, in the car, when I was moaning about it, my husband said: "So she's seen one pug, one shih tzu, one havenese... out of what? 200 border collies?"

There are 4 video competitions held each year where you can film the routine according to special rules and submit it by mail for judging. SO, our plan is to try and film an excellent copy of our routine and submit it before the December 31st deadline for the video competition. If we qualify in that, we'll have our title. If not, we can try again at a live competition next May.
After it was all over, I thought, "Why didn't I say 'Treat! Treat!' when Wonka froze?" ...that might have snapped him out of it. Or, "Squirrel" But then he might have gone running out of the ring to look for it!!!
But then I'll have to include a cane in every single routine we ever do!!!! They might get suspicious after the third or fourth appearance of the same cane.
