Day 1: Short story, we qualified!!(barely)
Long story: Since Wonka wouldn't be dancing until the afternoon, I wanted to keep him as rested as possible, so Hubby stayed at the hotel with the pugs while I drove up to the competition site and checked in, watched a few of the early dancers, etc. I thought I had calculated the time well enough to drive back to the hotel, have a quick lunch, load Wonka up and be back in time to change into costume and relax/BREATHE before it was our turn to dance. OOPS! I BARELY made it back with Wonka and was in the changing room getting into costume when someone called in "Amy? You're up next, you're supposed to be in the practice ring!" I ran out there, grabbed Wonka and music, got out in the ring to do my "sound check" and went out to get in our starting position. The music was just about to start when I realized "OH (bleep) I DON'T HAVE MY CANE!!!" You know, the one Wonka's supposed to put his paws on and circle around! I panicked and asked them to stop the music, called to hubby to go grab my cane from the car. The judge told me to go back to the practice ring and wait. Hubby brought the cane and I rushed back out with Wonka to get dancing. Well, Wonka started off well, despite me being an absolute nut job and red with embarrassment. Then, he missed his paw touches and he just froze...wouldn't move, wouldn't come when called. What else could I do? I went back to him and sort of danced around him, he finally lost the "deer in headlights look" and we caught up to the music just in time for him to put his paws up on the cane. It went well from there and we managed to finish by the time my red face was finally cooling off. I totally blame myself for Wonka losing focus and freezing - he was just picking up on my extreme nerves. If I was a judge I don't think I would have qualified us for that performance.... but, luckily I wasn't my own judge!

We got 8.0 on Technical (that's the bare minimum to qualify at this level) and we got 8.2 on Artistic. The judge wrote "the dead space in the middle did decrease the score, but kudos to you for hanging in there."![]()
Tomorrow is a fresh day and we're hoping to do much better. I'm not going to let that cane out of my sight until we're done dancing!!!!

I think you and Wonka are awesome! Tomorrow will be a better day, sending good vibes your way. Good grief, if I could get one of my Pugs to do 1/4 of what you and Wonka do I would be darn proud.

well you qualified!!!And at least for the next round you will know to leave earlier and get there in time AND bring your cane in! I'm sure he could sense your crazy-ness and was just giving you the deer in headlights look because he was checking to make sure everything was okay!!!
I'm sure you two will both be better tomorrow and you'll win the hearts of the judges and and win - but no matter what Wonka is a winner to me! I can't get our girls to do like anything, I'm so impressed how well he does all that stuff!!!
WE HEART YOU WONKA!!!

I agree, you two are amazing and I am sure it was just Wonka catching your vibes that made him stop in his tracks.
Mine might have pee'd on the cane, but nothing much else. As usual, Wonka was a trooper, and you didn't flee to the bathroom in tears. All in all, you did good and learned a lot today. Hugs to all.
Hey, it may not have gone as smoothly as you hoped, but like the judge said, you hung in there! And you qualified! Tomorrow is another day and I'm thinking you've got all the jitters and errors out of the way now.![]()
