    Default Raw bones

    Hi

I would love to give my puggies a raw bone now & then as a treat. We always gave our family pet yorkie raw bones but this was carried out by my mom as we were kids/teens and this was back when butchers existed on every street corner and knew you by name! (I'm old lol).

Could anyone give me a bit of advice on what to ask the butcher for? Assuming I find one

I wouldn't give chicken bones cooked or raw because even raw ones can splinter so what size/type should I be going for and as they haven't had anything raw before what should I look out for if it doesn't agree with them?

    Thank you

well I jsut nipped up and asked my vet and this is what they said...

We recommend that you don't give your dogs raw bones for the following reasons:

they can splinter and cause cuts in the gums/throat etc

    they can cause constipation/compaction

they can get stuck in their throat and cause problems requiring surgery

as Squig is older and not used to it he could become ill

I guess that answers my question, and I was so looking forward to giving them a treat! Carrots & blueberries it is then.

That's just not true, if you give marrow bones raw. A pug can't chew marrow bones hard enough to cause them to splinter. Cooked, yes...........raw, no. I give mine marrow bones all the time. I just remove the marrow, because it's too rich for my pugs............. it makes them throw up.

I give them to my dogs once a month, to keep their teeth clean.

They also last forever, and my dogs will go to the toy box, and pull out an old marrow bone, that still has a teeny bit of marrow in it, and chew on it all day. I keep all the old bones, for a long time, till I see that their interest is waning.......then I throw them out, and get new ones.

100% true!! I give them to mine as well. I do freeze them first for 24 hours and then just give them frozen. Mine can handle the marrow and they last forever! Wonderful at teeth cleaning. I just have to watch mine with them closely, they are the only thing that will cause a fight.

I agree with Beth and Jennifer 100%! I too freeze mine overnight and then only let them have them when I'm around to watch them and they love 'em!!! My Vet told me "no bones" too and that was 20 + years ago and all of my dogs have thrived and lived long and happy lives...

You can ask for soup bones, or marrow bones, and knuckle bones are wonderful, too! Knuckle bones tend to have a lot of meat on them, and they, too, last forever!

i give mine raw here and there too
several kinds of meat and raw bones in them
    got to be raw
many diets are based on raw meats and they need the bones in the diet..

my vet seemed ok with the knuckle bones/soup bones..they last forever and a hit

watch out they do not eat that much at the start......they can gets the scoots....I give it to them for an hour or so and take it up and give it back another time later

raw bones are a HIT here
