Mums and Dads in Oz, what are you feeding your pugs? Barney is coming home on friday. I am looking to get canidae all life stages for him. Anybody else using this or have any foods that they reccomend?

I get Elsa tomorrow and she's 8wks old today. I plan on feeding her raw food. She's at present on Royal Canin. I have started my cats on raw last week, so far so good. Elsa's mum was raw fed but her babies are on kibble.
Such an exciting time for us both :D

If your breeder is one of the responsible ones, he/she should provide you with a feeding schedule IE: what to feed, how much & how often. I didn't raise my boy in this country so when I get another pup I'll probably be asking the same question. When you take him in for his 1st vaccinations, your vet will give you some good advice too.

A word of warning - don't be fooled by those big bulging eyes that will stare at you & scream I'M STARVING! PLEASE FEED ME! especially when the humans are eating. Pugs need to be kept on a strict diet & their weight constantly monitored because 99% of them have no idea when to stop eating. That's why unfortunately so many of them are overweight.

You're going to be in for a lot of fun over the next few weeks & months. Good luck!

Ziwipeak is made in New Zealand....it might be cheaper there than it is here. It is a great food.

A well-balanced Raw is ideal though.

    Take care,

    Congratulations on your pug baby!
Always start him by continuing to feed what his breeder has been giving him. If you choose to change that, do so gradually over at least 10 days to avoid digestive upset.
Mine are fed mostly raw. If you would like to know of a couple of local boards in OZ for more opinions, just PM me and I will give you the links. There are some good BARF patties available up there in the Sunshine State I believe.

Thanks everyone. He is on supercoat puppy bites at the moment so we will be continuing those for awhile.Since I am at home all day I am going to try as hard as I can to feed mostly raw, but I like the security of having dry food as a fall back if you know what I mean? I haven't seen ziwipeak anywhere, but I will most likely be getting dry food online. Do they have an Australian distributor?
Puggered- whats a BARF pattie? Is it frozen food or dehydrated? I am pretty sure that Barney's breeder will give us a diet sheet, lol I have a couple of old rottie ones from my mum.
Oh no Ronnie I'm a sucker for sad eyes so I will have to work on my resistance. I have heard alot about how much they like their food.
JJ- I'm so excited for you! I can't wait to see your new bubba. I know how excited I am and how far away next friday is, so I can only imagine how you must feel.

    Sounds great!

Here's a link about BARF patties - they are frozen. Basically they are raw which has been prepared commercially, which suits people who haven't the time or confidence to make their own.

They seem to have just sacked their Australian distributor:
    (from advert this month)

    An Apology from ZiwiPeak
We’d like to say sorry to all our customers and
retail outlets in Australia who have suffered
intermittent supply problems in recent months.
We know how difficult it is when you can’t get
    your usual pet food.
We’ve been working on the problem...
The situation has improved already, and we
expect that it will soon be solved completely.
We are partly victims of our own success,
    because of ZiwiPeak’s rapidly growing
    popularity in Australia and overseas.
Supply of canned foods was disrupted when
we had to move our canning operations due
to factors beyond our control. We’ve now
sorted out the canning, and the full range of
cans will soon be available again.
    We’ve also appointed a new importer /
distributor for Australia who we feel will help
to ensure more consistent supplies and better
service for the independent pet specialist
operators who are our key outlets.
Finally, we’re upgrading our factory to double
production capacity: that may cause a hiccup
in supplies in September, after which we
    anticipate a much-improved situation.
For more information, or to contact the
    Australian importers / distributors,
    call 02 8011 0204,
    or e-mail ziwipeak@ bowhouse.com.au.

They still have a few stockists, so do email them if you are interested.

Thanks! They sound really good. I wonder how much they cost? Sounds like healthy dog take away. How long after Barney settles in can I start feeding those to him? There is a distributor of them down the road in Kallangur. Hahaha I got lost there once (unintentional detour) so it should be easy now that I know how to get back to my house from that suburb.
Oh and I had a message from his breeder today saying that he had his microchipping today. Poor little bubba cried but is ok now. Only a week to go!
