Hi all, im new here and a new Pug owner, ive had Lennon since December last year and i've never met anything so food driven in my entire life!
that said he's amazing!
my problem is i've noticed over the last few weeks that if i give him treats he will swallow them without chewing properly.
we buy him soft chew treats that are apparently "Bacon & Cheese flavour", now im not a dog but im pretty sure that they would taste good if he chewed them! but he just bites them into peices small enough to swallow then looks at me like "more?"
i think its a general problem he seems to have with food, like he needs to eat it now before its gone. he used to eat his daily meals way to quickly to the point were he would end up pretty bloated and quite often choking and we resorted to hand feeding him & wetting his food which has slowed him down.
if anybody has any suggestions to help stop him swallowing food without chewing it id appreciate it
cheers
p.s sorry if i rambled a bit!![]()

Buster here ... chewing is for lightweights, like my sister Mimi, real pugs don't chew, but we do eat quiche.
Floating kibble in water was the BEST decision I ever made. Now, mind, I still don't think my lot chew but at least the pieces aren't rough going down. No more post-breakfast vomits since I started.
As for treats, I'm of two minds. Either soft and small so I can break them into little pieces, or big, long chewies that they couldn't possibly swallow (or try to swallow--I stay away from midsize things I know they wouldn't try to chew and would be a choking hazard).
Also, if my pugs get to eager, I say "gentle" which they know means they have to take it slowly, and gently from my hand. Chewing usually follows. The swallowing thing, as other pointed out, seem to be a misguided belief that if they eat quickly, more will come. This stems from excitement, I've found. So give treats when calm. :)
Squig takes his time and savours his food, Pickle just looks at it and it's gone. I'm sure it comes out whole the other end aswell lol
