So we (wife and I) just got our first little pug this past Sunday (welcomes ourselves here Hello everyone *woof*)
Anyhow, since we are completely new to having a little puppy and pug ... it's all really just a huge learning curve at the moment ...
Wanted to find out though, when it comes to treat's ... any recommendations for our little pug, looking for something which is healthy and good for him even if this means paying a little more for good quality.
Obviously as the title suggests, we are in the UK and not everything that is in the US is in the UK ...
The best treats for training are things like poached chicken breast cut really small or tiny pieces of cheese - edam is good as it is not at all crumbly. However it is not always convenient to have such stuff on you. James Wellbeloved do tins of dried treats, liver or fish. They also do Mini Jacks and Crackerjacks biscuits which are good. You can get Superstars salmon treats from the Fish4Dogs website. Their sea jerky treats are also good as a nice big crunchy type treat. I don't much recommend the more "junk food" type treats but they have their place and are nice occasionally. In that bracket I would put the Pedigree cheese and meat training treats (can't remember exact name). They come in a yellow bag, are quite small ovals and are soft so can be broken into even smaller bits. Schmackos are also good from that point of view; I would never give a whole strip but they are good for breaking off into tiny pieces.
Those look OK but to be honest I would still put them in the "junk food" category because of the wheat content. If they are soft and can be broken into smaller pieces they might be useful as training treats. The recommendation says max 10 treats a day for a pug size dog - if you are going to be doing any sort of obedience training you will be getting through a heck of a lot of treats which means they need to be really tiny (think of a cube of cheese no more than 2 or 3 millimetres). However those Royal Canin treats are good in that they are OK for young pups. A lot of the shop bought treats say they are not suitable for pups under 6 months. I would suggest you try them and see what you think.
We also used pieces of poached chicken and cheese along with lilys kitchen puppie treats (organic no nasties) they can just be a little difficult to get hold of we order of there webste but we also use this food so it all comes as 1 order which makes things easier, where we are in uk there are not local shops which sell lilys but you maybe lucky :) i swear by their products.
Hope the training goes well :) and big congrats on your new arrival :)
You guys are awesome ... thanks for all your advice!
That stuff from Lily's Kitchen looks great ... think I am going to give it a go ... have a cat too (Jasmine - Long Haired Persian) .... might give her a taster too!
I seem to be stocked up on ziwi peak (from online) venison... and I spend an evening a month with very well behaved hounds sitting and unblinking at me as I snip each one into 4 pieces (I can usually hold two together and cut them at once, making 8 pieces)... these tiny bits - about half the size of my small finger's fingernail - then are re-bagged, or put in a tightly closed plastic jar... and delved into as we walk out the door.
