Default Cooking for our pugs and chihuahuas

We have always wanted to feed raw but due to some issues with the chihuahuas and Sara's low immune system we have decided it is not practical. We currently feed the pugs Nature Diet (we will continue while we have puppies) and the chihuahuas Ziwi Peak (very expensive in the UK and not practical for, soon to be, four pugs). We do feed raw tripe (which I feed, not Sara) and cook fish, chicken, turkey and beef mince .... what do you cook for your dogs? If you just feed home cooked food what do you add to ensure they have all the correct vitamins and minerals?

    Thank you.

If you can get the book "Real Food for Healthy Dogs and Cats" 3rd edition by Dr Karen Becker and Beth Taylor (can get online) it gives recipes for not only raw feeding but also cooked feedings and she tells you what vits/minerals and other supplements to add for optimum health, including oils, eggs, sardines, glandular products. Her recipes exceed the minumum standards. It doesn't look like your feeding raw bones so calcium/phosphorus will be an issue. Your dogs can get some bone from the canned sardines (packed in water). Maybe you can still give your dogs raw chicken necks or chicken wings also.

Anyhow, meat to veggie/fruit mix should be 75:25 and the 25% portion should not be more than 10% fruit. There's a few premade foods you can check out and see if they are available to you. These are veggie/fruit mix and you just add your own meat. Grandma Lucy's :: Artisan :: Pre-Mix

Addiction is a New Zealand food so I wonder if that's available to you. Also Natures Logic Nature's Logic has a whole food supplement you can add to your feedings. But I would also get the book. It has valuable info even for folks who don't feed home-made.

Does your vet not sell any or recommend any kind of vitamin?

Thanks 'pug town' we were really posting out of interest at what you all feed. Nature Diet (the main part of the pug's diet) has bone and everything else they need .... and they have sardines now and again, probiotics and vegetables! Apart from Nature Diet (which has a little grain and a couple similar cooked wet foods) the only other grain free food that we trust in the UK is Orijen and ZiwiPeak - it seems that you have much more choice in the US. We will see if we can get the book you mention though as it looks good!

    Thanks for the link Bella

Lilys kitchen is a good food (we have fed it in the past) unfortunatly it does contain some rice - or patoto which we are trying to avoid if we can.

If pugs and chihuahuas have different feeding needs, which diet should if follow for my pug/chihuahua mix? At the vet yesterday we were told that she was about a half a pound underweight, and I have been feeding her only 2 heaping Tblspns of Castor and Pollux Natural Ultramix Puppy Food. New to this 'tiny dog' feeding- was following posts here for pug puppies, but now you throw in the different for chihuahua's and got me wondering!

Hi, The only real difference that we can think of when it comes to feeding chi's is the fact that chi's (especially puppies/tiny chi's) can get hypoglycemia.. For this reason we feed all our dogs (chi's and pugs of all ages)
    4 meals a day always!

How old is your puppy and what does she weigh?
