Default I'd like your opinions on these foods :)

Please give me your open and honest opinions on the following dog foods I list below. I'm looking to switch Emma to a grain/potato free diet.

    Holistic Select (Anchovy, Sardine/Salmon Adult)
Holistic Select Radiant Health Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon Meal Recipe Adult Dry Dog Food at PETCO

    Nature's Variety Instinct (Salmon Adult)
Nature's Variety Instinct Grain-Free Salmon Meal Formula Dry Dog Food at PETCO

Those are the only I've found thus far. Any ideas for other dog foods would be great :) I only need to get 15lbs bag (lasts us about 2-3 months) and I do not want to go over $35 for a bag.
    Thanks!

We used to LOVE Holistic Select. it used to be made by a small company called Eagle Pack. The woman who helped formulate it was a very well known Great Dane person. It got bought out by a large company and our dogs started having big problems. They swore up and down they did not change the formula, but both our dogs (Before we got Izabella) started having multiple poops a day, red, itchy butts, and Seamus developed a fungal infection!

Did you check Dog Food Advisor?
OK, according toDFA: Holistic Select is primarily a grain-based dry dog food using a moderate amount of specific meat meals as its main sources of animal protein… thus earning the brand four stars.

That was for the chicken meal and rice variety.

Nature’s Variety Instinct is a grain-free kibble using an abundance of meat and poultry meals as its main sources of animal protein… thus earning the brand five stars.

    Enthusiastically recommended.
THat was for the chicken meal and duck meal variety.

If it were me, I would go with the latter.

I did check DogFood Advisor and saw that Instinct was rated higher. My only problem is Petco doesn't have it in a medium sized bag (online atleast, will be going to store later today) PetsMart does not carry the brand and I'm not sure about PetSuperMarket. I know of a small dog food store nearby and I might go check them out.

We buy Taste of the Wild High Prairie Canine, which is rated 5 stars, at our local feed store. Have you a local feed store? Our dogs do well on it. Also, Nature's Domain is sold at Costco. it is a grainfree, but only 4 stars. It is in a bigger bag, 35 lbs, but only about $30.

All I do know is that both our Chihuahua and our Dane did beautifully for two years on Holistic Select, then when the company got bought out, they did poorly. Now, if the Dane started having problems, I would not have thought too much, but the Chi has an iron constitution.

I really have been wanting to put her TOTW. I'll probably switch her to just grain free 1st and if she doesn't change much then I'll try taking out potato in her diet.

I know some dogs have problem with potato, but some sort of starch is inevitable with kibble. It needs something to make it all stick together. I have read some dogs do better with sweet potato than white.

Epigen 90 uses gelatin, and is probably the best kibble going.

Wysong Epigen™ Starch Free™ Dog Food, Cat Food, Pet Food

I'm hot to try this, but the cost is scaring me.

    Take care,
    Lisa

Holistic Select is not grain free.

Instinct I have used successfully but I used the Duck & Turkey and the Rabbit formulas.

Now I just use Brothers (all flavors) Brothers Complete and Great Life Grain Free (salmon and buffalo) doctorsfinest.com and Epigen (fish) Wysong Epigen™ Starch Free™ Dog Food, Cat Food, Pet Food
