Default Questions about Peanut Butter & Serving Sizes!

Hi Everyone! We just got our pug, now 4-months old, a Kong toy. She loves it! I have stuck a carrot in there but I think she'd be even happier if I put some peanut butter in every once in a while...is that okay to do at her age? Can dogs eat peanut butter? I have seen some things that suggest avoiding all nuts, but I also see things suggesting peanut butter is a favorite. Please advise.
Also -- our dog eats 3x a day. At one point do dogs go down to twice a day?

    THANKS!!!

I think peanut butter is okay in small amounts, you can also freeze yogurt in the kongs, make sure it does not have an artificial sweetener in it. I'd ask the vet about feedings, we never fed 3xday, he'll let you know amounts and times.

You never fed Tinker three times a day?!? Whaaat? Oh no! I am wondering if our breeder was wrong...I have never even asked the Vet if that's too much. She eats small meals, and doesn't seem to be getting fat (!!), but still...don't want to overfeed her. Hmmm. Anyone else feeding their puppy three times a day?

I start feeding 2x a day when they reach 6 months.
    So instead of 1/3 cup 3x a day, I now feed 1/2 cup 2x a day.

Also, giving peanut butter in the kong once in a while is perfectly ok. You dont want to give too much, too often as it is fattening!

Yup, I feed 3X aday still at 5mo-- 1/3 cup each meal. At 6mo I will change to 1/2 cup 2X aday. Don't know about peanut butter- I just use a treat stuffed in there--wouldn't p/b be a nightmare to get out of the Kong??

My Lola can lick peanut butter, clean as a whistle from her Kong. Amazing how far their tongues reach!

Winnie gets peanut butter about twice a day (sometimes 3 times a day, usually on weekends when I'm home all day). The vet said to slow down on that, but Winnie looooves it sooo much that I can't help it - I spoil her. She only weight 18 pounds at 6 months, so I think it's not that bad. She also gets 1/2 cup twice a day of food.

It's not spoiling her...it's giving her something that's not all that healthy. Peanuts are in the legume family. They have lectins that bind to intestinal lining and can cause malabsorption of nutrients and cause increased intestinal permeability which can allow undigested proteins to leak through, thus resulting in symptoms most commonly blanketed as "allegies". And the ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 of peanuts is not healthy. Not to mention the additives used to actually make peanut butter. But if it makes you feel better, they make "organic" peanut butter. My dogs also love oreos, corn bread, and baked potato with sour cream and cheese, but they are not going to be spoiled with it.

Instead they get spoiled with raw meaty bones like turkey necks, rib bones, marrow bones, occasional bully stick or jerky.

I just bought a Kong and it said about putting peanut butter inside. Will leave it till his stomach is better though. WHat else can I put inside? We have small sweets but he's quite good at getting them out quickly...

I switched the pugs from 3 to 2 meals at about 6 months old, at which time I also switched them on to adult kibble instead of puppy kibble.

Having said that, with their recent ailments they had to have several small meals a day. We have got back to 3 meals a day and I am keeping it that way. It is no particular hardship for me as I work from home. They so adore their meals, I figure they may as well have 3 smaller rather than 2 larger.
