    Default In Need of Recipe!

I like to know what i'm feeding Nano, so one-ingredient treats are usually what he gets. However, they get quite expensive, and i've seen people selling home made dog treats at the Market. They claim they are healthy and all natural, but will not divulge the ingredients (I assume to protect their business).

I was curious if anyone has, or has scene a healthy recipe to make home made dog treats? I would very much appreciate it, and so would Nano :) I love baking, and poor Nano looks so sad when I spend so much time in the kitchen, and then he doesn't even get a bite of what took me so long away from him haha.

Does anyone here make their own treats? How do your pugs like them compared to store-bought treats?

    For chicken jerky:

slice chicken breasts into thin strips. Place on lightly greased baking sheet or nonstick cookie sheet and bake for at least 3 hours at 180. Store in airtight container. Can be frozen.

    Semisoft pumpkin treats:

Pumpkin Dog Treat – Very very easy

1 – 15 oz can mashed pumpkin (not pie filling)
¾ cup rice cereal, dry (not baby cereal). I used brown rice cereal from a natural or whole foods store or Central Market. Brand “Bob’s Red Mill” has a great selection.
    ½ cup dry powdered milk
    ½ tsp ground cinnamon

    Preheat oven to 300 F.

Mix all ingredients together. Drop by small spoonfuls (about ½ tablespoon) onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes. Can also use a cookie gun or pastry bag. Treats are semi soft. I used a cookie gun on one batch and a large ziplock bag with a pastry tip on the other batch (which I preferred). You can also try substituting Bob's Red Mill Garbanzo Bean flour for the rice cereal if you want it grain free. Don't know how it would turn out as I haven't tried the substitution myself. But for recipes that call for flour you can substitute garbanzo bean flour.

You can also just get a dehydrator and make your own treats as it is cheaper. Sometimes you can get a "special" kibble and use it as a treat as well.

I tasted it (the pumpkin treat) myself as it is made with human grade ingredients. Bland but ok for the dogs as I would require some sugar and spice in it!! I used a big ziplock bag with a pastry tip stuck in the corner and squeezed out about a quarter-sized rosettes.

I used to make these before we found out Tinker couldn't have peanut butter. My daughter's dogs loved them as well.
2cups whole wheat flour,1 cup rice flour,1/2 cup brewers yeast,1/4 cup wheat germ,1/2 cup powered milk, 3/4 cupmooth peanut butter,1/4 cup canola oil,2 eggs beaten, and 1 cup water. Preheat oven to 325. Combine the wheat and rice flours, yeast, wheat germ and powered milk. Cut in peanut butter. Add the oil, beaten eggs and water.Combinethe mixture with your hands.Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut out using cookie cutters. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet or parchment paper for 14 minutes. Return the treats to the cooling oven to harden overnight. This makes 3-5 dozen. Store in airtight container.

Nano loves peanut butter! Those would make cute seasonal gifts too, if you cut them out with fun cookie cutters! I must also try these :D

When I got Tinker one of my friends bought me dog biscuit cookie cutters. They are about 3 inches long, one is a bone, one a cat and a fire hydrant. They make a darling gift tied up in a bag with paw prints allover it.
