Default Please help! Ideas for chewy treats

    Hi all

I need ideas for chewie sticks for Bella. She is 4 months old.

The reason I ask, is, I have been giving the Natural Torro rawhide twists with the bacon center. She loves them! Problem is, since she is older, she can gnaw throught them in record time and rip hunks of raw hide off. I am constantly snipping at the sticks to get the hanging pieces of rawhide off, with scissors...and often getting hunks out of her mouth. She is bound to choke.

But she loves these and I want something safe to replace them...something long lasting and safer. I supervise her but based on how she can get through these torro twists, there may come a time when I don't notice. I don't want to chance it.

She has a Nylabone which is great for teething, she enjoys it, but she LOVES her tasty chewies.

Any ideas? Some kind of chewy bone or item, that lasts and appeals to a puppy.

    Hugs,
    Denise and Bella

the kong is going to get suggested..lol for sure
most puppies like them and get a big one to start off..the puppy ones are not that strong for chewing.
fill them with some peanut butter and freeze them and your pug will be busy for a long long time.

I used to give the pugs bullwinkles when they were small as well. they loved those the best..

    Thanks, Pat.

I think I have the only dog on the planet who is not occupied for hours with the kong. I bought her the origanl shaped one, put peanut butter in it, and froze it. It was gone in less than 10 minutes!

I went and bought the Kong bone shaped toy. It is great! It has little grippers on both ends of the bone, so it holds treats securely. As the original kong, she would get discouraged if the treat fell inside...she would just leave it.

With teh bone shaped kong, you can put a treat in it, sticking out and it securely stuck in there, so she nibbles at the part that sticks out. But then when she reaches the end of what sticks out, she gives up and ignore the little piece stuck inside. All she would have to do is gnaw a bit and she could get it but she doesn't!

LOL...she uses her original kong as a bouncy toy, like a ball. We throw it, it bouces every whcih way and she loves it as a toy. So at least we got some use.

I really need an idea for a chewie type stick, like rawhide type...a yummy favored stick that she can teeth, and enjoy...

    Any ideas?

    Hugs,

    Denise and baby Bella

bully sticks..bull winkles are a good choice as well
you can also give her a raw...knuckle bone from your grocery store.. soup bone.
they need to be raw..they will splinter if they are cooked.but raw is fine
you have to keep an eye out for the scoots..so take off some of the meat on the bone maybe..
but my dogs spent hours and hours as puppies chewing on them..and still love them...lol

If she likes her Nylabones, why not try some of the flavoured ones?

we give cow hooves but they smell so nasty we normally use them outside...they are hard but both of our girls gnaw at them and make them last forever...we have to throw them away before they get through them...and they are pretty cheap...

sometimes we'll get a knife and get some peanut butter and put it really thin in random places...or a treat in there...they get so excited!

i know its not exactly what you asked for but they've got a lot of great natural chews that last a while...

MY dogs LOVE the elk antlers!!! They last forever and are great for the dogs.

My local store also carries Fish cartilage. Very good (yet stinky) treat...

You mentioned that I may need to "keep en eye out for the scoots". What do you mean, exactly? LOL...some of these terms I am unfamililar with.

    Thanks!
    Denise

P.S. Do I just ask my butcher for the bone? And Should I indicate a certain size, seeing as Bella is just a baby? Thank you!
