    Default Home made dog food

    Hello All,
Ollie is almost 5 months and doing really well-very active and alert, seems to be right on schedule with potty training etc but we have had to switch his food as the kibble he was on ( science diet) is not available locally. I also felt that commercial dog foods were not the way to go so we would like to go with home cooked food, just some kibble occasionally.

Generally our dogs have eaten some kind of meat and rice concoction with raw veggies- but we've always had bigger dogs. Ollie likes chicken and rice and LOVES raw carrots so this is simple enough but since we started him on the chicken and rice diet he is doing one, maybe two small poops a day. I am trying to figure out if this is just because he is older and heading towards just doing the big job once, or whether he is not getting enough nutrition.

How on earth does one know how much of the chicken and rice mixture to give to him? He is currently still eating four times a day-we give him a tiny bit of cerelac at 7.30 am followed by chicken and rice breakfast at 9. Then he has some chicken and rice with kibble mixed in at 2pm and finally some at 9pm before bed. He is pooping at 7.15 when he wakes up and sometimes in the late evening.

I just want to be sure that
    a) the diet plan is reasonably ok ( we do give treats etc on the side for training)
    and
    b) he is getting enough for his needs

    Please advise!

There isn't really any calcium in that, also I know the calcium & phosphorus need to be balanced. Also omega fatty acids.

The "breakfast slop" thread toward the top of the page is a great mix.

Also "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete guide to Natural health for dogs & Cats" is a great book, that lists several recipes. Many (if not all) are cooked. I don't think it's ideal, but it is balanced.
