Just want to say hi.
We are the proud owners of "Edie" 8 weeks old. We brought her home just over a week ago, and needless to say what a ride it has been!
We have finally got her to sleep through the night (well, at least until 5:30am), just like when my boys were babies all over again!
My question is this - Edie loves to go in our backyard to play, and has her BURSTS of ENERGY - is it O.K to let her run around so much?
She loves to run around and chase the balls, tree leafs and anything else she can find.
I am careful not to let her get overheated and bring her in when she has had enough, but I want to make sure this exercise is ok. She has slept better since being able to run around and burn off her Puppy energy.
Thanks for any input.
Welcome to the village
Those bursts of energy... what we call Pugtona's, are exactly what Edie needs to do.
You'll find that she suddenly drops on the spot and is asleep, as though she's passed out. After a little doze she'll start up again.
At 8 weeks you can put a leash on her so she becomes accustomed to it and learns to walk nicely in your own yard.
She's too young to go anywhere, where other dogs frequent, as she is not yet fully vaccinated.
The other thing to avoid until she's an adult is 'forced' exercise. A good example of this would be taking her on a long walk. Picture a comic strip of a child pulling a puppy along on the leash when it doesn't want to go anymore. That's a bit of an extreme example but I'm sure you understand what I mean.
Also although you don't want her to be afraid of going up or down stairs, you don't want her tackling them until she's much older, to avoid putting undue strain on her joints.
Anything else you need just ask.
