Default New Member - Pug Died Yesterday

    Hi,

Im new here and i was hoping someone might be able to tell me what my pug died of yesterday. He was just under 2 years old and happy, fit and healthy but he died suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday. He was a bit stiff when i came home from work on friday, he looked a bit unsteady on his backened, but seemed better by saturday morning was trotting around the garden and lifting his leg to pee again so i thought he was ok. Then saturday night he seemed a bit lethargic and was resting his head on everything my knee, the arm of the chair, the cat etc. I just thought he was tired or maybe still a bit stiff from what had happened saturday. I had a vets appointment for today to have his back/neck checked, the vet didnt think it was an emergency worth taking him in the weekend, they thought it was just muscular pain. Yesterday morning he was very lethargic, he couldnt stand, drink or eat, he was just staring into space and gasping for breath. I went downstairs to get him some milk to see if he'd take that (he had slept in my bed overnight) and i came back and he had a blank look on his face and was just staring at the wall. There was a strange crackling noise coming from him and when i had a closer look, on the left side of his head the skin was literally crawling, it looked like hundreds of insects moving under the skin. The noise was like when you pour milk on rice crispies and was coming from his head. I immediately ran downstairs to get the phone and ring the vet, by the time i got back upstairs, whilst on hold waiting for the vet to answer, he had died.

He is having a post mortem this week but does anyone know what happened to him? My vets have no idea, they have referred him to brain specialist for the post mortem to be done as they've never heard of the skin crawling thing, they think he had a seizure (i found him with his legs stuck straight out, a bit of vomit and he'd pee'd) but he made no sound at all.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Im heartbroken

I'm so sorry for your loss. That's truly heartbreaking. Only the autopsy can tell you for certain. It could have been a stroke but I'm not a vet. 2 yo is way to young. I lost one of my black girls a few years ago @ 10 yo. She was running around with the other dogs completely normal one day & within an hour she went unconscious. I rushed her to the vet but she died within minutes of me getting there. The vet told me she had a brain hemorrhage.

It's so hard when you lose them so suddenly. Probably harder than losing an old dog because it's so unexpected. I hope the autopsy can give you some answers.

I am so very sorry. I've never heard of these symptoms, so can't help, but wish you peace and happy memories in your grieving. Please let us know the results of the post-mortem.

I can't offer any insight into why, but I can offer my condolences on your loss. If you get any answers please let us know.

I'm so sorry, what a terrible thing for you to witness.

It does sound like a seizure, could be PDE or a brain hemorrhage. Hopefully your Vet can give you some answers after the autopsy.

How heartbreaking! I am so sorry for your loss. My first thought was PDE but the crackling noise is not something that I've ever heard of before. That must have been so frightening. Hopefully the autopsy will provide some answers.
