So, I had to dig out Wonka's pedigree to find his AKC number to put on his Canine Good Citizen form and mail it in. I was looking at the pedigree and wondering about some of the names on there. I read through the AKC website and figured out the abbreviations for color, etc. ( American Kennel Club - Sample AKC Certified Pedigree ). Not that it really matters to me, but I'm curious why only one of his relatives has a DNA number listed... does that mean the other pugs were not genetically tested? Or does that just mean the AKC doesn't have their DNA on file?
And, has anyone heard of either:
Ming-Joy's (pug name)
or
Moonlyte's (pug name)
Wonka seems to have a lot of both in his ancestory. He originally came from a "hobby breeder" and we adopted him when he was around 9 months old. His paperwork came with him. I already knew (and don't really care) that he doesn't have Champions in his bloodlines... but I am curious to know who some of these other puggies were.

It's up to the breeder/owner, whether or not to have the DNA testing done. It is not required, by any means.
If there are no champions in the pedigree, and/or none of the dogs in the pedigree have been acquired from a show kennel/breeder, there is no way of knowing any of the dogs in his pedigree.
The breeder is the one who chooses the "kennel prefix", and if that kennel prefix has not produced any champions, and is only used by a hobby breeder, there would be no way of knowing any of the dogs in the pedigree. When there are no champions in a pedigree, we call that an "open", or "pet" pedigree......all pet breeding, because it has no recognizable/known champion producers in it.
I hope I explained it OK.........It's kinda hard to explain to people.

I hope I didn't sound condescending, with the explanation.
One other thing........there are sometimes champions in a pet pedigree, but the farther back they are, the less they matter, because if each generation after the champion ancestor is bred to a pet, and then continued to be bred to other pets, it "waters" down the gene pool, causing the genes of the champion, who's name is way back in the pedigree, to virtually disappear, and not even to matter, except to be able to say, that there is a champion there,
That being said, unethical, or ignorant puppy producers, ( I won't call them breeders, because they don't deserve the name), will more often than not, if they just happen to have a champion, way back in the 5th, 6th, or further generations, play on that fact, stating that their puppies have a champion pedigree, or "champion bloodlines", in order to get more for their puppies.

Not at all. Thank you for trying to answer my questions.
I don't mind one bit that Wonka doesn't have fancy names/titles in his pedigree and if it's a "pet pedigree." I was just curious if the two kennels that were listed might be familiar to someone. Just because Wonka's line doesn't have titles, maybe his Aunt or Uncle or Cousin from that kennel went on to be a Champion. Doubtful, I know.
I was also curious about the DNA testing because I'm fairly certain I remember hearing someone tell me that the breeder where Wonka was born does do genetic tests on the pugs to make sure they are safe/fit for breeding.... but neither of Wonka's parents listed a DNA number, it was his grandpa that had a DNA # listed. Is it possible that the tests could have been done, but the AKC just doesn't have that information? It really doesn't matter to me either way.... I'm just curious and thought this was the best place to ask.![]()

The DNA test is done on dogs that have produced a certain amount of litters, within a certain time frame. After so many litters, the AKC does then require a dog be DNA tested. I was not aware of this requirement, as my own dogs have not produced the numbers that are required in order to have to have DNA testing. I am not sure of the numbers that are involved, but I will find out.

Amy, If you're trying to see if Wonka's parents had any health testing you can check
here:
CERF - CERF Certification Online Verification and Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
If they're not listed, doesn't mean testing wasn't done/or wasn't passed....some don't do testing through offa, just through their own vets, but it's a start.

Thanks for sharing that! I had no idea there was a database like this! I will check to see if Wonka's relatives are listed.
Thank you for answering this question for me. I know so little about breeding that I wasn't sure if the AKC ALWAYS had the information or if some breeders just did testing locally at a vet and the information never made it into a database or to the AKC. I've learned something new!

If you find little white mittens somewhere along the "pedigree"/"bloodline"/"family tree" it was not me...I, Miss Morgan *Mosey Moo* would like to remind you it was simply a dip in some flower...but i'd like to be your sister...you can help me get unfluffy?! again?!
I love my D'Arcy and Morgan!

Interesting to see the CERF database includes some Canadian pugs, including some of those bred by Denver and Farnsworth's breeders.
