Hmmmm...I was just checking if the people who ARE currently breeding pugs to other breeds (and giving them ridiculous names I might add) and who advertise this fact on the web and elsewhere had commented on this thread. I know there is at least one who is an active member of this forum who does just that. I'd love to hear them tell why they do it and let people know who they are.

First, Eugenics makes me very uncomfortable. As the daughter in law of German parents who were exposed to Nazi eugenics practices, it makes my blood curdle.
Second, I find the whole "designer dog" trend to be a disturbing trend. NOT because these disgusting breeders are creating more mutts, but that they are selling them for profit. When I meet a dog on the street whose owner proudly tells me "He's a Morkie, Pucker or whatever ridiculous name has been given to the mutt, I am always amazed that they actually paid (usually a lot of) money for the puppy. A large percentage of these designer dogs will develop the same problems of their parent breeds - sometimes ALL of the problems of both breeds, so people who breed designer dogs are only creating dogs with even MORE problems. The pure breeds have enough issues as it is!
Purebred dog, in general, have so many genetic issues. A lot of this has to do with irresponsible breeding, surges in popularity and overpopulation. If you haven't seen the BBC Documentary "Pedegree Dogs Exposed" I suggest you watch it. This doc really shows the dirty side of purebred dog breeding and the controls that the various clubs have over breeding (and NOT for the betterment of the breed).
Dalmatians have a genetic predisposition to life-threatening urate bladder stones. The gene has been identified. A professional and respected breeder selectivly bred his Dalmatian bitch with a German Shorthaired Pointer, then bred the puppies back to purebred Dalmation. After 4 or 5 generations (with LOTS of genetic testing along the way) he created a Dalmatian without the gene that caused these severe urinary problems. However, the AKC won't recognize these dogs as purebred Dalmatians. (Whole Dog Journal, June 2010)
In my opinion, it really comes down to two things: greed and ego. But, the result is a living thing whose life often ends up a very sad one.
"If I were a pediatrician and a mother told me, "it's just too hard making healthy food everyday for my kid, I'm just going to feed Total cereal everyday, it's 100% nutritionally complete," we'd all feel sorry for her kid. I am a vet, and when people tell me "I've found a really good dry food, I think I'...ll feed it everyday for the rest of my pets life," why don't we feel equally sad?" Dr. Karen Becker

I really think the slogan needs to go away from the Village--young people and very young people should be able to read this site without any double entendres.

I can live with Dorothy Parker, but I am very sensitive to the fact that youngsters should have one site they can read with their parents.
Sadly. it seems they are coming up with the neat and cutesy names first, then sticking the two dogs together. Have you seen the list of 'designer breeds"???? My 2 cents, as someone who rescues, but can appreciate the breeders who are truly reputable. I could not imagine life without a pug.
