I was online last night an just poking around at pug breeders within a 200 mile radius of my location. I was surprised to see three breeders with kennels. Are kennels a bad thing? Asking out of curiosity.
interesting question... I was at a mini long-haired doxie breeders for a few days... and she too has kennels... I mean: she has so many pairs - probably 6, and she gets them great care regularly and they all love her and run to her - she is out there every day, they are warm and dry and safe and have fresh air and shelter... and she brings them INTO the house when they are due - gets them settled and helps the mothers to be nest... and keeps the puppies with the moms a good length of time and NEVER ships pups, ONLY sells them to people she has met with... and she does guarantee her lines... so I guess I consider her a "good" breeder... hers do show and place and have conformations... but yes: she has barking kennels out the back of her house... and I wondered the same thing...
If I had not seen the care (vet) and the daily she does with these dogs, I might not have been so convinced... since I "know" some pug breeders do it all in their homes (no kennels)... so I will watch this thread with interest.

Many people that show have kennels inside their home as they have too many to run the house. Personally, I'd rather sell my pups to a pet home than to someone that has kennels.
There are different ways to kennel also!!!! Some people kennel but alternate dogs in the house and the beds.
The thing to watch out for is someone that kennels and the dogs are not clean nor loved. Someone that has more than 2 breeds......and someone that kennels and doesn't show!!!!
Some breeds do better in kennels than others. I think pugs don't do well in kennels generally, even clean, climate controlled, dry kennels. They are companion dogs and when deprived of close human contact tend to develop neurotic and anxiety issues.
Take care,

In the old days, many breeds were owned by show breeders with huge show kennels...........well maintained, clean, with the dogs being very well cared for. Those days are gone now, and most show breeders just keep a few dogs.......well at least not the many that were kept in the big kennels of yore. In those days, those with huge show kennels, would have kennel managers, and loads of other people to help care for the dogs, get them ready for shows, etc. etc.
Of course, there were other breeders, like today, that kept just a few dogs, but there were a lot of huge kennels, especially in the 30's 40's and 50's............

My Dad's partner breeds poodles and bichons ... not often, but very high quality. His business is a boarding kennel and cattery. His dogs and my dad's dogs live in the house and have compartments, but usually have the run of the house.
