I have come across many new terms since joining Pug Village. BYB was beautifully covered a few topics down- please could someone explain "Kitchen Breeder" for me?
Thanks!![]()

In my own head, a kitchen breeder is a private person, who happens to have a couple of pugs, not neutered or spayed, and they allow them to breed. I feel Thelma & Louisie came from one such person. The puppies were indoors, the parents weren't outdoors in a cage, like a BYB breeder would do, I got to see the parents, who weren't the best specimins around, but cute! The adult pugs got to be part of the family, which doesn't happen with BYB's or puppymills.
This was over 10 years ago, at the time I really didn't know much about puppy mills, BYB's or kitchen breeders.
This is my definition, other's may differ.
In my uneducated opinion, I am in agreement with Mary Jo. When I think of a BYB, it's someone who has more than a few sets of Pugs that he/she breeds to make money. The Pugs are not in the best of condition, and they are left outside much of the time. There is no real concern for them or the breed's standards. A Kitchen breeder, on the other hand, suggests someone who decided it might be "fun" to give it a go. They like the idea of making a profit, but it's not the only reason they're breeding the Pugs. I don't think they take the breed standard into account as much as they should, but I think that this is more because they don't know enough about the breed. I think my Luciano came from such an individual. She clearly cared about the Pug pups, and the parents were on the premises to see, but they weren't "standard" Pugs. I see this in Luciano, who is just a little lankier and longer--at least right now--than what the AKC says. He also had undescended testicles, which is a genetic defect. According to my vet, the breeder I bought him from should not breed any more Pugs from his parents. All that said, I do think she was trying to do a good job. I think she just wasn't as educated as she should have been. I thought about not getting Luciano because she was a Kitchen breeder, but I fell in love instantaneously. I couldn't leave without him. And I'd only gone to "look at the litter." LOL. If I were to get another Pug, I'd wait and get one from a better breeder, or more likely, I'd get a rescue.

Thank you.
I was a little nervous in case I fell into this catagory, having had 2 litters at home. But I guess I am off the hook as I researched pedigrees for 2 years before buying Maisie (to match up with Samson) and passed the Kennel club exam to be a breed judge.
I am having fun researching pedigrees for a husband for Onion now, there were 3 handsome candidates at the Champ Show recently. What a good excuse to go visiting pug households!
And I thought you had to have children to undergo the "are you a good enough boyfriend for my little girl scenario!"
