Hello All,
I'm thinking about putting an add in the paper for a one time stud situation
the fee being the Pick of the litter. Solely for the tremendous character and above average health of my pug Oscar ...He's 5 and never been with any females his whole life. My questions to the group are:
1 Is he too old for this?
2 Will this affect his personality in a negative way?
3 Would it be wrong to have him fixed after that?
4 Should I just forget about his bloodline and have him fixed anyway
Thanks for the imput,
Brendan

Hi Brendan,
I hope someone here can answer your questions concerning Oscar. I do not have so much as a guess but I'm sure other will have ideas and experiences to share.
It's nice to meet you and I hope we'll have a chance to get to know more about you and Oscar.

Welcome Brendan![]()
This is a very complicated question you're asking, and I'm sure others will reply....We're usually slower on weekends.
For my part though I would start by suggesting that placing an ad in the newspaper is not the way to go about this. I'm assuming that the puppy you're wanting from this possible deal is for yourself?
If so, the chances of you getting a reply from a reputable breeder is practically nil....This means that the replies you'll get will be from backyard breeders, ameteurs and home breeders seeking to make a buck...And this in turn means that the puppy you'll take home probably won't come from a suitable breeding pair...even if your dog is actually suitable, the bitch used almost surely wouldn't be.
You then could very likely end up with a Pug pup that doesn't have the health and temperment of your Pug. Assuming your Pug is a suitable candidate for studding, the only way you can hope to end up with a Pug pup that shares your Pugs health and temperment is to pair him with a bitch that also meets the health and temperment requirements to be suitable.
To do this, and to give yourself the absolute best chance of finding success with this proposition, you need to hook up with a reputable breeder and take it from there....and again, you're not going to find a reputable breeder interested in using your Pug as stud through a newspaper.
I really can't help with questions 1-3, so I'll let others take it from here :cheshire:

Thanks for the quick response
Yes The pick of the litter would be for myself and my wife.
I never wanted any ankle biters I've always had bigger dogs Labs Dobies
Collies even, but since we purchased Oscar from a local Breeder( who does not breed them anymore )I'm gone now...he's my buddy.. he has no Idea of his size I don't imagine... Beyond my 6' stockade are 2 english mastiffs that would love to have a little Mcpuglet sandwich but he just peers through the fence and wags his tail like They should play together
Anyway trying to stay on subject....How do I know if His backround is of "Good stock"? I have his Lineage from AKC but This could really mean nothing regarding "Stud" quality What am I looking for other than Good form and health and temperment?

Hi Brendan,
He should still be able to sire a litter at 5, although their fertility does decrease the older they get (sorry guys).
In my experience, once you have used a lad at stud, he will have "the scent of a woman" so to speak and will look to mate again regardless of whether you have him done, especially at 5 years old. It might make him a little more "I'm the man :beatnik: " and he might not be so ready to listen to you if you call him away from the girlies in the park.
It might be altogether different in the US, but here in the UK, I think you would be hard pressed to get pick of the litter from a mating with an older and unproven pug. I have only used a stud dog once (my other litter was by Samson) and I paid £150 for a pug who was pedigree compatible, had been shown and had a champion background - whereas the cost of a puppy is around £800.
The other word of warning I would mention is that you may have difficulties if you approach a maiden bitch. It can be rather complicated if neither pug knows what it's all about, especially if the people involved have not overseen a mating before.
I am sure that a reputable breeder would be happy to advise you on a course of action. Can you trace an active thread in his recent pedigree in case you have to revise your plans? There may be someone who is continuing with his line elsewhere.
Almandine and the gang - George, Dannika, Darwishi (Wish) and Pickle.... and who knows.... maybe a new little boy too...
Samson, Treacle, Maisie and the beautiful Onion at the Bridge. In our hearts forever.
Hi,
To answer your questions
1. No 5 years old isn't too old
2. Yes, it could likely change his personality. Once a male is used at stud they are often on a "mission" to do it again. Even if he has never marked in the house before he may start to.
3. no it wouldn't be wrong to neuter him, but he still may exhibit the negative behaviors after being neutered.
4. More than likely you should neuter him.
What do you know about his pedigree? He's healthy, but are his littermates healthy too? What about his parents, and grandparents?
Feel free to email me his pedigree, there's a chance I could know the lines he's out of.
Good Luck,
Jesse
