I was just told that pugs aren't the best mothers. This is the first time that I have ever heard this and I wanted to see if anyone else has had the same problems with there pugs. I was told that when pugs are giving birth someone has to be there to take the sacks off and remove the ambilical (SP?) cord on the puppies because they won't do that by instinct. I always thought that someone should be there while they are having puppies, but I also thought that you were supposed to let them clean the puppies off and take care of them and only if there were problems you step in to help. If anyone has any information or had any experiences like this please let me know.
Thank You!
Yes, you definately need to be there when a pug is whelping their puppies. They often won't remove the sac. Because of their flat faces it is difficult for them to do. You really need to be with them constantly until the puppies are about two weeks old. They're so tiny that the mother could easily crush them and not realize it. Overall some pugs are good mothers, and will willing nurse, and clean their pups on their own, but many want nothing to do with them. You may need to hold them down to let the puppies nurse, and you'll have to be the one to clean the puppies too.

Maisie was scared of the puppies first time around. I was just all set to start mixing the puppy milk! She would not let them nurse and would walk off if they came near. With much patience and 36 hours later, she finally "got it" and has not looked back. She is just the most devoted and efficient mother now and still washes her babies of 2 years and 14 months!![]()
She was very keen to wash the puppies, but she was more interested in devouring the afterbirths than sorting the sacks out, I have to agree with Jesse - help needed for that bit!
Almandine and the gang - George, Dannika, Darwishi (Wish) and Pickle.... and who knows.... maybe a new little boy too...
