I have a question. I've asked MaryJo about this before but what exactly constitutes spam and/or spamming? I read disclaimers everywhere I go on the Internet but honestly don't understand all the terminology and it's confusing when you see websites where people are pushing the sale of something, whether it be a pug, a book, a service, or anything else. It seems like the line between what I've always thought was spam is growing harder to differenciate.
Is it:
1. Joining any website, ie., PugVillage.com, for the specific purpose of advertizing something a person wants to sell?
2. Stealing Email addresses from a website's membership list for a variety of reasons, ie., sending advertizing thru personal Emails, attempting to steal members from one website to another, etc.?
If you do a search under "Pugs" you're going to find hundreds of websites offering pugs for sale offering just about anything at any price. Do those sites pay for that Internet listing? Also there are pug websites where one breeder after another lists pugs for sale or inquire about pugs for breeding purposes.
Also, public websites like Yahoo (just as an example) often say they're unmoderated. Even though their disclaimer says no spamming, who is supposed to be responsible for guarding against such activity?

Those we have held in our arms for a little while,we hold in our hearts forever.
Spam is:
Unsolicited EMAIL / ADVERTISING / OFFERS that are sent via email, sms, or newgroup.
These include messages that are sent to harvested email addresses from places like PV, Yahoo Groups, MSN Groups, New Servers, etc etc etc even places where you legitimatley opt-in for a specific service may sell your email address to SPAM COMPANIES who will then send you information about VIAGRA, BOOB JOBS etc etc

To answer the second part of your question....anybody can advertise a WEBSITE on the internet. Its simple...just create your website with either good or questionable content and submit it to a search engine. There are no humans at the other end checking and the site will eventually get listed on the search engine. Thats basically a free listing. The more words in your site like PUG, PUGS, PUGZ, PUGGERS, PUGDOG etc etc and the more times those words are used will give you better chance of your listing coming to the top of somebodies search hits. But again, it's all free so you could have 1000's of hidden (white text, on white background, or hidden in metatags) in your website. All those words will be indexed.
So if you type in PUG and one of those sites has 20 occurances of the word PUG it has a better chance of coming to the top of your search results list. Thats why when you type in things like digital camera you will get lots of sites that are simply portals to real shopping or info sites... they are affilliates and they get MONEY from click-throughs.
As for YAHOO....YOU are the moderators.... if you complain enough, they will remove the questionable content. They do not monitor.

Shelly,
I agree with you about using the internet as a tool to find a breeder, I didn't address that part of it. I just had a case of tunnel vision about the selling of pups over the 'net. Sorry.
I have a spamcatcher through my Internet Provider and it used to be very effective - until the Viagra salespeople started using personal names instead of business names.
Already today I have Email from Robert Jones, Michelle Harris, Delores Simpson, James Peabody and Harvey somebody all selling Viagra! and the day is young!! Even the comical idea of half the adds being addressed to "Rosebud" wore-off a long time ago! I'm sure right now there have been that many more since I deleted the above.

It really depends on where you are and where the Pug is at. We paid around $660 for Apollo from a local breeder, complete with papers and parents on premise. Last week we were at a pet store looking for a new toy for Apollo when I saw they had two Pugs, who looked to be about 3 months old. Just out of curiousity I asked how much they were charging. He told me $1400, EACH. Believe me when I tell you I had to pick my jaw up off the floor!Originally Posted by tibkitty12
As far as prices are concerned I recommend taking a look at the "puppy prices" thread. I think it's all explained pretty well there.

Jesse, I was going to recommend that as well.
Heather, I too wondered about these prices, thats how this "puppy prices" thread got started.

I just wanted to add that I don't think the reason these puppies are being sold for that amount has anything at all to do with the points discussed in the puppy prices thread. In my opinion, it comes down to greed, and the fact that there are people willing to pay. It is an interesting thread though.
