Kittie went in for her ultrasound today to determine if she's "with pugs". No such luckit looks like I'll have to wait a while longer to have the smell of puppy breath in my house. It's such a let down when you plan so much for that perfect breeding, and spend hours and hours driving to that perfect stud, and it doesn't turn out.
Wish us luck next time,
Jesse
Sorry, Jesse. That must be very disappointing. Better luck next time!

Jesse,
What a bummer! Do you try all natural breedings or do you go AI??? We have had much more success using the estrus strips that you get from Revival animal and doing AI. I don't think we have missed yet. Saves a whole lot of $$$$'s doing the progestrone testing. Of course we have not tried that many times lately. She has not had a pug litter in over a year. She is completely starting over with new dogs and some better bloodlines.
She said she is going to start concentrating on her blacks. She has a beautiful black female that came from Denmark. She has that beautiful inky black coat and also has a high percentage of black/black pedigree.
She also brought in a beautiful black male from Sweden. In his 4 generation pedigree 75% of the dogs top and bottom on the pedigree are blacks. He has a beautiful inky black coat and he is sooo short. He is only 13" from what little neck he has to the base of his tail.
He weighs 20 lbs and there is not an ounce of fat on that boy. She has started getting calls for stud service with him, but she hasn't decided how she is going to do that yet. She does not want to dilute his pedigree so she wants him bred to females that have heavy black in their pedigrees also.
He has sired 2 litters in Sweden and his offspring are winning in the ring now over there.
Good luck and I hope you get to smell puppy breath soon.

Jesse: Sorry you didn't get pups, that's a big disappointment, I know. I was hoping for you to get some Candyland pups. Will you try again next time?

Yes, we'll be trying again on her next season to the same stud. It was AI, but we didn't do any progesterone testing. They just relied on the stud dog, and Kittie's receptiveness to him to determine the right time. Problem was...Kittie wasn't receptive to him, ever! I don't know if she just didn't care for him, or what, but I'm planning to have progesterone tests done next time.
Kim, How do the estrus strips work? That could be a good option for us. Your friends new imports sound really wonderful. Best of luck with them. I really think blacks are finally starting to get a more fair chance in the ring. The quality has really improved in the past few years.
Jesse
Jesse,
I am sorry to hear that your girl is not pregnant. When you said Kitty was never receptive to him, do you mean that she never stood for him to mount? I am just a little confused since you said it was artifical. I've have zero experience with AI so if you don't mind sharing I'd love to hear more.
Lucas
Hi Lucas,
When dogs are bred through artificial insemination often times the behavior of the dogs determines when is the right time to breed. An experienced stud dog will know when is the right time. Usually when a bitch is ready to be bred she will stand for the male, and flag him (waving her tail at the male). Many breeders feel that this is just as reliable as progesterone testing. With AI the dogs are generally allowed to flirt a bit with each other, but not actually mount.
Jesse
Jesse,
Do you get better results with AI? I always assumed it was used in situations where the stud dog was not able to get to the bitch in person.
Almandine and the gang - George, Dannika, Darwishi (Wish) and Pickle.... and who knows.... maybe a new little boy too...

I don't know if you necessarily get better results with AI than a natural breeding. It's easier in many ways though. You don't have to worry about the male getting himself all over excited, and then jumping off at the worst possible time, outside ties, maiden bitches that aren't all that happy to be being bred etc. It seems that most breeders I know are doing AI 's pretty much all the time.
We decided to keep Kittie at home next time, since she's much more of a momma's girl than I realized, and do transcervical insemination. I've been told that has something like a 94% conception rate.

My co owned Giant Schnauzer Ch. was bred, compliments of FedEx, in Texas living with my daughter, using sperm from Pa. I haven't heard what Jesse was describing. Whatever, it didn't take, darn. Daughter called it AI as she won't ship . The Giant is being driven to Westminister again, a long trip from Texas to NYC!
