Hello, I have recently rescued a pug (that was left on my door step) I did post in rescue I have been advised to post here due to she came to me pregnant. I have had her to the vets and she should be delivering in approx 1 wk. MY husband and I own our own business so I am able to stay home with her. I have started to take her temp and it's still normal 101 I am going to try (on the advice of my vet) to deliver at home. Could anyone suggest or tell me when I am going to need for the delivery.
thank you in advanced
Rebecca

You can visit this website and it will tell you and show you what you need:

You will also need to make sweet pea a "whelping box", it should be placed in a quiet dark place.
Here is an idea of what one looks like and you can make a homemade one with a trip to homedepot...

One thing that you need to remember with pugs is that they may deliver the babies, but the rest is up to you. It is your job to break the sack, tear it off, remove all the mucus, stimpulate and then cut the cord.
Since you are expecting 9 babies, you WILL need to have some supplements for sweet pea to keep up her energy. There is a supplement called "Nutri-Cal", and you can get it at the vet or a local feed store, buy a couple of tubes, you will need it the first couple of days.
What else....
Ohh there are only 6-8 plates on the dinner table and with 9 puppies you will need to feed in rotations. I suggest putting the 4 smallest ones on together and the other 5 together. You may even want to break it up in 3 teams if there are somen super tiny (or big pushy) ones (which I will bet my life savings that there will be a couple that are really small).
I can't think of anything else right now, just get on google and surf around. Questions are welcomed...

My husband did make her a whelping box but it sure doesn't look like this one but anyways she likes it, she will go in there and snuggle up in the corner and snore away. I have the whelping box in my office where I can keep a close eye on her, it is quiet
My 7 month old girl (princess) will be going on vacation with grandma when the time comes, I think it would be a good idea so I can focus on just Sweet Pea and the new ones.
Sarina: how do you tell each puppy apart?
Well most of the time fawn pugs are born with bits of white on their chest so at first that is how I tell them apart. Trust me after 2-3 days, they make themselves known and you will know. Believe it or not they will all look diffrent. Now if you have a litter of 9 boys or 9 girls with all the same white patch or none, good luck! LOL

Sarina, that line just cracked me up!!!! The last litter of Am Cockers I bred, the bitch delivered 6 black/no white girls and 1 buff girl.. When mom didn't get her milk, I ended up hand-feeding all 7 and, believe me, trying to keep track of which of the blacks I'd fed and which still needed it was a monster trick!! The best thing I could come up with (since I'm not a fan of baby collars on small breeds) was to paint the nails of one foot with a different color for each pup and then write down the colors in order of birth.
LOL, I have to admit that it would've been almost as tough with these two if they hadn't been opposite sexes..![]()

You can paint different colors of paint or nail polish on them. That's how Topaz got her name!!!
I'm glad to see you here.
Sarina and others can help with the whelping...and we all can help with pups!

Oh boy! What an undertaking!
Treacle was one of a monster litter of ten. All survived, so it can be done.
I am sure Sarina's links have it covered for essentials to have to hand. I find it most valuable to have a big pile of cut up cloths/towel for cleaning up the puppies and drying them so they don't get cold. It's good for wrapping the waste in, too. I just chopped up a hand towel or two last time.
Make sure you have a spare warming box in case you need to take puppies to the vet and leave some at home in a warm "nest". A hot water bottle and a towel under a pillow case would be my choice of filling for the warming box.
Get a good book! I found "The book of the Bitch" a very valuable guide for my first whelp.
Have a notebook to hand a record the weight and chest marking of each puppy, that was you'll know who's who and be able to see that everyone is gaining weight.
Make sure the phone is near the whelping box and have the vet's number handy.
My concern with such a huge litter would be uterine inertia - where the womb gets stretched so tight that the muscles can't start contractions. Can you get her some raspberry leaf tablets? They help with contractions if she can have some in the week before delivery.
I am sure you know already to be looking out for her refusing a meal and scratching up a nest, I am just thinking of odds and ends here.
If you should happen to have a stillborn puppy, my advice is let Sweet Pea wash it, so she knows what has happened, if you take it straight away, she will probably be very anxious.
If I can help with anything please let me know. I am glad you have Sarina on side and I am sure it would be cheaper for you to call her than me, but you are very welcome to my phone number and welcome to use it day or night if you need it, even to steady your nerves.
Good luck to you and to Sweet Pea.
