    Default Artificial Insemination?

Has anyone had any experience with canine AI?

A friend of mine has just spayed her brood bitch for health reasons (pyo)and her line will die out unless she can use her dog at stud. But of course, he just can't manage to pull it off...wrong end, getting off, scratching etc but just can't make the money shot

My vet says it's really simple, but I don't know that I'd be brave enough to try it myself.

No,the sire has to be a resident outside the uk..There are also many rules depending on the type of semen, frozen, chilled etc.
You have to apply to the KC before the vet inseminates.

The dam also has to have had a previous natural mating and litter
(I think this still stands,it did a little while ago)

You are not allowed to have AI done on a bitch if the sire is in this country alive, if he has passed away and had semen stored then you can use it but it has to be a certain number of years after his death.

That is interesting as it is very often done in USA. I had a friend that was a breeder and she would only AI for the protection of dogs against Bruculosis (SP) if they did a natural mating.

It is not easy and usually a vet will do it and that is usually who would do it for the feint of heart.

I will be interested to hear other responses

I have actually never bred a dog naturally. All of the breedings I have done have been AI. I also do them myself and it is not difficult. I do however have my vet do progersterone testing on my girls so that we can pin point ovulation to the exact day.

I have heard in the past that AI is not recognized by the kennel club, and well quite frankly how would they know what you did behind closed doors? I am not suggesting you go and break the rules, but you do what you have to do. Really what rules are you breaking? Rules about how sperm is delivered? If you would like further detail on doing your own AI's send me an email and I give you a link to a company here in the states that can provide you wil the necessary tools and they even have videos. Also, in my opinion AI is much cleaner and safer than natural breeding. I would also like to point out that my last 2 AI's (with progesterone testing) produced 6 puppies each.

Let me ask you a question... Do you all freeze sperm for future use? I know here if you have a good male and want to preserve the line (god forbid something happen) we collect our males and freeze it at a storage bank (http://www.ik9sb.com/). I personally have 6 breedings of Noah stored up in WI (I don't store here in Fl. because of the hurricanes) and in addition I also have some stored in Oregon on a dog that I inherited sperm from (REALLY LONG STORY). I just can't imagine not being able to preserve the future like that.

I am really surprised there is no AI's allowed on live dogs in UK. How in the world can a breed like a English Bulldog reproduce without artifical means? They simply aren't made for that sort of action. i do my AI's as well, easy breezy.

We have a bank on my friend's foundation male that she started with years ago. He was a Glory dog and we still have 4 collections on him. We have a clinic here in Houston that does it on site. They are great. Pricey but they do it all in house. I don't know where they actually keep the stuff, but they do the collection and prep in house.

I think AI is just much safer. Less chance of Pyo or other issues when you do natural breeding.

I think that is what the KC is trying to achieve by never allowing AI. If a dog can't mate naturaly then there is something wrong,to big, heavy, etc etc and our KC is all for health apparently!

I then ask what about the seniors that can still reproduce but can't do all the "action" anymore?
