    Default Phantom pregnancy

I've put this in breeding rather than health because I'd like input from breeders.

Pudding came in heat at 7 months 1 week, it lasted 21 days and all was fine.
She now has an under carrage and swollen nipples. I'm expecting a phantom pregnancy. As you can imagine, this under carrage is hampering Showing a tad. It doesn't look nice on a puppy.

Do you advise letting nature take it's cause or stopping it with something like Galastop?

Haven't spoken to the vet yet but I know some of you guys will have experienced this, with your show bitches.

False pregnancies usually don't show up immediately after a bitch goes out of season, but around 9 weeks or so, after menses. They usually occur when the bitch would normally whelp, if she had been bred. I would just let Nature take it's course. Any drug given, could hurt more than help.

If she is having a false pregnancy, just make sure and watch for any signs of mastitis.........those darned invisible puppies just don't drink much milk!

Thanks, I'll try the parsley because her last lower two breasts are hard and lumpy but don't seem to be painful. It's about 6 weeks since the heat cycle started, 7th Sept.

I'd say that you are right to assume a false pregnancy, considering the time frame. Watch those teats closely, and if you see a greenish discharge, or they feel excessively hot, and hard, get her to a vet. We had a poor bitch come into the animal hospital a while back, whose teats actually ruptured from the masitis she was sufferig from........not a pretty sight, and so preventable, if she had been put on antibiotics early on.

Thanks Beth, I'm a little worried because they're swollen and lumpy but not painful... yet!

Well, you can squeeze some milk out of them, and if it is any color other than white, it's mastitis. If they are infected the discharge will be greenish, and sometimes it will be tinted with blood, so that's a way to be sure of infection.
Sometimes the breasts will be so engorged with milk, that they will feel hard and lumpy, but if the liquid that is expressed is white, they're just full of milk.

Put warm compresses on the teats that are hard....and squeeze a bit of milk out but don't milk her down as she'll just get more milk!!!

Someone once said.....cold cabbage leaves til they warm up helps too.
