We are going camping in July and we really want to bring our baby with us. I know she would have lots of fun, but I worry about the heat. It gets to about 78 Fairenheit on teh hotest days. We would keep her in teh shade and have lots of swimmign time in teh lake - plus plenty of water to drink.
Please offer some advice.
Thank-you!![]()
Hello there!
We take our dogs camping every year. We make sure we only camp in spots that have a great deal of shade and that have a dog- friendly swimming area. With all of the swimming in the lake, most of the time my dogs stay pretty chilly. We also have cooling bandanas to put on them but they have such chubby necks and thick fur Im not sure the bandanas do much.
I will rinse my dogs well with fresh water after a day of lake swimming, otherwise they get itchy afterwards, the fresh water rinse definately helps.

If you are careful with them I don't see why not. Keep
them cool and watch out for plant eating and things of
that nature. Have a great time!

Thanks guys!! I'm so happy that I can take her!! It wouldn't be the same without her there. Does anyone know how much Benedryl you can give a pug?
Yes, take her camping... Mine love camping... we use and RV and they are very spoiled... they really don't care for the water so much, but love all of the walks. Make sure you have some flea/tick protection applied before you go, just to be on the safe side. I would use it a couple of days before just to make sure there isn't any problems.
I'm glad you mentioned benedryl... I keep some with me at all times. My Suli is allergic to bee stings... and her lil face will swell up... and she would start having problems breathing... I would ask your vet how much to give before you do... I give Suli 1 adult tablet if she gets stung and I see the swelling start... and 1/2 if she has a allergic reaction to anything at the campsites. I don't like giving the benedryl because it knocks her out... but it has saved her life too. She weighs about 20 lbs.
We've taken Wonka and Nilla tent-camping and to rustic cabins. They've both done well and enjoyed their adventures. We recently bought small tow-behind camper that we're in the process of fixing up - so this year the pugs will get to camp "in comfort"![]()
Some things I've found helpful when camping/traveling...
- Make sure you pack a first aid kit for the pugs (eye wash, benedryl, vet wrap tape, tweezers, etc.)
- Take along drinking water if you go on a long walk - both for drinking and to wet the pug down if they get hot.
- Do an internet search to find the nearest vet before you travel and print out their contact info... just in case!
- An x-pen gives pugs somewhere safe to sit while you prepare meals or are at the firepit - then you aren't worried about holding the leash.
- Be sure you pack all of the things your dog needs on a daily basis - food, medicine, eye drops, nose roll wipes... and a toy or bone to chew on if they like doing that.
- Try to stick to the usual routine as much as possible - feedings at generally the same time as home, potty breaks/walks around the same time.
- Print out a good photo of your pug and keep it in the glove box along with a copy of rabies certificate or vet/shots record. If your pug goes missing, you'll be glad you have this with you.

What a great list, if you go out of town, know the area code of the area you are in, incase you need to call information for a vet or some reason. You could also bring a small baby pool along.
