I don't know what breed(s) is involved, but this is just heartbreaking.
Pet safety back in the news after 7 puppies die on American flight

Alice, Michael and Rosie the Pug!
From reading the article, it sounds like American Airlines needs to be prosecuted for breaching it's own safety regulations.
(Quote from USA Today)
ABC news, which notes that the high temperature was forecast to surpass 100 degrees in Tulsa that day, says "loading the puppies appears to have violated the airline's policy for the safe travel of pets which states that 'pets cannot be accepted when the current or forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit … at any location on the itinerary.' "
Hopefully there will be a full investigation.
Anyone know how many pups to a crate? D
Did they have one each or were they sharing?

Ellen, when airplanes are of need of a heavy maintenance issue, the airlines try to just route them to where they may end the trip at the maintenance destination. In cases where the airplane has to go out of service due to a mechanical problem, the planes are sometimes sent out empty to the maintenance facility where only the cockpit crew members are on board. No passengers and no bags are taken.
Also, if the temp was already 86 in OKC in the morning, just guess what the inside of the cargo hold's temp was? Think how hot it gets in your car just after 10 minutes of shutting off the car with your car sitting in the sun. The cargo hold was closed up until roughly an hour before departure so all that heat builds up inside. There is only one door normally on a narrow body aircraft so no cross ventilation is even taking place while the bags are being loaded. Add the temps to just the stress of the entire noise and such, it truly is a horrible way to transport animals.

I wouldn't ship the boys cargo unless I had no choice because of the dangers, but if there's no choice... I would rather keep 'the pack' together and take the risk (doing my best to mitigate the risks of course) than send the pups into rescue or to a new home. Heike, my best thoughts are with you as you plan this journey.![]()

We're moving to Prague, CZ, from southern Oregon. My husband is already there; Toby James and I are going Oct. 1. I've decided he'll go in a Sherpa bag with me on the plane. He's at the maximum weight but that's tough. He's not going as cargo. More than likely, we'll take a flight from San Francisco direct to Frankfurt, then transfer for a flight to Prague. The first leg is a long flight. My question is about pee-pee-poo-poo. Of course, TJ will go before we get on the plane. But how do we handle this during the flight? Do I get some of those pads to have in case he has to go? I've talked to the vet and will give him a very mild sedative because I know he will be resistant to getting in the Sherpa bag. Any ideas, thoughts or experience with long flights? Thanks. Terry
Is Toby james trained to go on a piddle pad or go potty when you ask him to? carry piddle pads with you, line his carrier with several, just incase he has an accident. When you think he needs to go potty, bring him to the restroom on the plane in his carrier along with a piddle pad. Lay the piddle pad on the floor of the bathroom, take Toby James out and put him on the pad to do his business. If he has an accident, again bring him to the bathroom take him out and remove the top piddle pad out of his carrier and dispose of it,clean him up if needed(bring some dry shampoo or wipes with you, incase he gets soiled from pottying). This will also let him stretch his legs in the bathroom.
Have a safe flight,
Trish
When we got Wally's sherpa bag we rubbed the inside of it with a piece of freeze dried liver, and rewarded him for exploring it for a couple of weeks before we went. Then when we flew, we put in his favorite toy and a sock I wore for a day, and he never made a peep.
Safe travels!
