We were planning on getting Penny spayed on Saturday. I'm starting to think she is coming into season now. How can you tell?
Freddie is sniffing around her more this week (he is neutered - so no danger of pups) and at our meetup she was more interested in sniffing the others.
If possible, she may even be a little more manic than normal.
I don't want her to be done in season, as I know that is more dangerous. Do you think she is coming in?

Normally the vulva swells before a bitch comes in season. As lond as she isn't bleeding you can safely have her spayed.

How old is that normally.. 6 months or older? I was thinking the same thing about Bella, they normally go thru one season right? and when that is done she can be fixed?

The first heat cycle typically is around 6 mths of age, some earlier some later. I may be misunderstanding your question, but no, you don't have to wait until after they've had their first cycle to spay.....just not during. If you do it before she comes into heat, you will avoid the mess and the chance of an intact male jumping the fence and her becoming pregnant. I had my females spayed at 6 months and neither one had gone into heat yet. Hope this helps.

I've never had a female dog...so this is rather interesting ! How often do females go on heat?

We had Pickle done last week, I think she is 2 weeks younger than Penny? I was worried we might be cutting it a bit fine aswell. They won't spay her if she is in season anyway and I'm sure they will check her out before they commence proceedings, if you've missed the boat you can get her done after, some vets prefer them to have had a season anyway. Hope you can get it done Saturday though.![]()

I would just mention your concern to the vet and make sure they check her out properly before starting anything.

Thanks for the replies. Couldn't get her in until Thursday. I will definatley say to the vet that, based on behaviour, I think it's a possibility. I've not seen any blood on her, the floor or her bed. Hopefully we'll get in before the first one.
For those who have had theirs spayed - did they calm down, once the hormones were out of their system?
