Bowag had a liver shunt. It totally gave him a new lease on life!! He's 5 now and had the surgery when he was 6 months...so the surgery helped. We took him off the milk thistle as he was sooooo stressed re the constant urinating, so weighing pros and cons, not so much help, but his was a different issue than your little guy.

    Hi Shayna!

Ok, I got SAM-E from Only Natural Pet and I have a question. What dosage do you give Kelev? According to the bottle, it's one 200mg pill a day but i've read in other places that it should be less, based on weight. The bottle specifically says don't cut the pills in half because of the enteric coating. How much does Kelev weigh and how much do you give him?

He seems to be doing well on it!

    You're in my thoughts!!!

Bailey just tested with high liver values and the vet put her on Denamarin, an over-the-counter supplement of Sam-E and a concentrated form of one of the components of milk thistle. I can't say whether it has helped yet, because we just started her on it yesterday. it might be something you could discuss with your vet.

    Take care,

What dosage of SAM-E are you using? I checked high and low for side effects with milk thistle and found none, so I was confident in using it. Winston isn't on any meds, other than theophylline though.

According to the Denamarin bottle it contains:

    225 mg. S-Adenosylmethionine (Sam-E)
    and
24 mg. Silybin A+B (milk thistle component)

She is to take one chewable tablet per day on an empty stomach at least an hour before feeding time. he said it's okay to wrap it or coat it with something to get her to eat it. She ate the dose I gave her yesterday very well with a little chicken breast spread on it.

    Take care,
