    Default Itchy Swollen Nose Fold

My Emmy has been itching her nose since early last spring. She scratchs until her nose bleeds and her nose fold is swollen now. We have put her on a grain free diet and that has cleared up her nasty ears but her nose is still a problem. Also when I clean the fold I get nasty looking black stuff out of it.

    Anyone else have this problem???

Winston always has crud in there. I wash his face after he eats and I clean the wrinkles every other day usually. Just a damp washcloth works fine.

yes Squig suffers badly and gets infected, it costs me a fortune at the vets :( I clean it every day with boiled luke warm water and dry it thoroughly. You just have to try and keep on top of it the best you can, I feel sorry for Squig sometimes it must drive him mad :(

He also gets lots of spots on his chin and his ears are full of thick black gunge. He also suffers with his eyes, he has dry eye and one is badly scarred. He always lets me clean & cream him twice a day without protest bless him. He is such a lovely dog.

Squig is just adorable, she reminds me of my Annie who went to the Rainbow bridge just a year ago.

Well I guess I happy to hear that Emmy isn't the only one that is scratching the heck out of her nose. I even put an E Collar on her for over a month but she could still get up against things and rub it.

She know's she is not supposed to scratch it so sometimes she will go hide and scratch away. Poor little girl, I've tried just about everything I can think of to clear it up.

I should not have said I was happy that your Squig is going through the same thing, I should have said that I was glad that it is not something serious since other pugs are suffering the same symptons.

The black stuff is probably yeast..yucky!!!!

You can get meds from a vet....or monostat from the drug store. Just be careful that you don't get it in the eye!

The trick is keeping the fold "dry". I take a round cosmetic pad and dry my girls nose fold 3 times a day because she has a deep one. Just a thought.....your girl could have lashes itching her eyes and you think she's rubbing her fold but instead is doing it because her eyes are irritated. I've been down this road also........

You can use ear cleaning solution or Diamond Eyes by Johnsons to clean the nose fold twice daily, every day. This properly cleans and disinfects the area. If you get an infection you can get Fuciderm from the Vet which is anti-fungal, antibacterial. I use it occasionally on Pudding who has a large nose roll.

If your pug has black gunge in the ears, there is definitely a problem that requires a Vet. The infection could be caused by mites or yeast and you will need the appropriate medication for this.

The Juvenile acne on the chin or muzzle you can treat the same way as the nose roll.

Hope all of theses problems clear up soon.

Thanks Jaqueline & Diane but all these methods have been tried and tested, this has been ongoing with Squig for a couple of years. He has even been to specialist vets, they have come to the conclusion that he is just a gungy type of dog lol. He doesn't have yeast or mites, just lots of thick wax that needs cleaning out daily. Although I hven't tried the Diamond eyes so I will give that one a try, I think I have tried just about everything else lol

Suzi - I know what you meant lol

Gotpugs that's a good point, I forgot to mention that, Suziee check in the fold for spikey whiskers and also get your vet to see if there isn't an eyelash ingrowing or something thaty could be irritating her eye.

Winston used to get those bumps on his chin. Turned out to be an allergy to plastic bowls, so now it's only stainless steel. If he drinks out of a plastic bowl at someone's house though, they come back. He also gets the bumps if he's been chewing on something like a nylabone for awhile and it's been resting against his chin. I'm guessing this is a plastic allergy too.
