Sassy went to the vet this morning for her Spay surgery. Everything went fine, and she is recovering at the vet until tomorrow. While they had her, they discovered from a stool sample that she has Coccidia. They are treating her with Albon, and told me not to worry. Does anyone know anything about this? Where can she catch this sort of thing? Do I need to get Dozer checked out now as well? Thanks in advance everyone!![]()

You can take a sample in. It's from other animals.....can pick it up anywhere. Some say if one has it...treat all. In adults it's NOTHING serious at all!!! I did almost lose a 6 month old to it as he showed no signs and got violently ill quickly. Until they got enough stool to check..they were worried it was pancreatis and that I'd lose him! He was on IV's. Treated with albon as soon as they realized what it was...and he walked out the next AM like nothing happened! I had an older one that had it...just showed a bit of mucous in her stool..but she was fine!!!
Nothing to worry about!!!! Relax and get ready to love on your girl when she gets home!
Bo came home with it as a pup and it was treated when I brought him to the vet for his check up ay 8 weeks, he was fine and Maggie came down with it about 2 years ago, she got very sick quickly buy as soon as I got a stool sample to the vet, she was put on Album and was fine within 24 hours.

Coccidia is a protazoan, that can infect dogs, by way of other dogs, cats, and most of all, birds. If you have a lot of birds around your home, or if you raise poultry, or if your dogs have been in an area where there has been poultry, your dog can pick it up. Wild animals, such as racoons, possums, rats, squirrels, etc., can also carry it.
One of the problems with coccidia, is that it will not be detectable under a microscope, unless the oocysts are actually reproducing, at the time the slide is viewed.. Thus, it is missed a lot of times, when they look at a stool sample.
The Albon will take care of it, and the dogs just love Albon! It smells like Pina Coladas! LOL

Thanks all! I appreciate your responses. I am really glad that the vet caught this before it turned into a bigger issue. I will probably take Dozer in tomorrow so he can get checked out and on Albon as well if need be.

baby chubbs had it when we brought him home, he LOVED the medicine, it made him forever addicted to bananas. He got it again at about 10 months, other residents at our apartment complex were not cleaning up after their pets. It took 3-4 fecal tests for them to identify it as coccydia, Chubbs was pleased as punch he got his favorite banana medicine again.
