Bailey got blood drawn yesterday and results are in. The following were abnormal:
Platelet Count - 831 (normal = 170-400)
AST (SGOT) - 82 (normal = 15-66)
ALT (SGPT) - 363 (normal = 12-118)
BUN/Creatinine Ratio - 32 (normal = 4-27)
Potassium - 6 (normal = 3.6-5.5)
Na/K Ratio - 25 (normal = 27-38)
T4 (final result still pending) - 0.9 (normal = 1-4)
her bloowork was done back in April when I got her and the liver enzymes were normal then. She has been on rimadyl, so we are taking her off that and he has given her Denamarin for liver support.
her potassium and thyroid were both a little off last time as well, he is going to do more testing to check for Addison's and we are waiting the final results on the thyroid.
Any advice or thoughts on these results? She is probably 14 or 15 years old, the shelter said she was 11, but both vets said she is considerably older than that.
I brought her in because she just didn't eem quite right lately and being on rimadyl, I was concerned for her liver too.
BTW: She eats Stella & Chewy's Duck, Duck, Goose Formula with some ZiwipeaK vENISON & fISH MIXED IN. She was overweight, but now is at a good weight for her frame. She also receives Nzymes and a glucosamine DS every day. Anything I could do differently to improve her liver function?

Lisa

Kelev's ALT was down to 164 and they were pleased with that. He had been at 1500 something. He's on Sam-E for liver support.
I was just going to say have her checked for Addison's. Especially with her NA/K ratio at 25. What was her sodium #? Addison's can throw off all other values a lot. Does she have any symptoms?
Her sodium was 147 (normal = 139-154). Creatinine - 0.6 (normal = 0.5-1.6), glucose - 92 (normal = 70-138). I haven't noticed any Addison's symptoms yet...but with a dog this old, they nap A LOT anyway... She eats well and her poop has been normal. She had been on a diet because she was very overweight, but then began to lose very rapidly, so I upped her feed....so that sudden loss might be related to Addison's. Also with as many ogs as I have, it is sometimes difficult to figure out who did what poop, and I've got a few poop eaters too.

Are you sure it was fat she was losing, or did the vet say that maybe she had ascites (fluid buildup)? Winston has been going through some liver issues lately and i've completely changed his diet to Blue Buffalo, no processed treats (baby carrots and frozen broccoli for treats now), milk thistle extract, a vitamin and digestive enzyme powdered supplement and salmon oil supplement. In two weeks, his ALT had dropped, and he lost the pot belly he had, which we're thinking was indeed ascetes. He just had a bialysis and the results were normal! This is after a month of huge changes. I'm about to add SAM-E too. His coat looks fantastic now, he has more energy and he is almost 11 years old.
bailey was heavy all over when I got her in April. She began to lose weight normally on a good diet, but then suddenly lost a lot of fat and began to look a little haggard, but still had a little bit of a pot belly, her coat also had a flea-bitten appearance, but she tested negative for parasites, yeast or bacterial infections. That's when I took her in and asked for the blood panel.

Yes, i regularly vary the protein. She has also had the lamb formula ZP and the beef formula of S&C's, and Nature's Variety (raw) rabbit formula.

Bear with me, I always like to play investigator, it helps me learn too. What about her digestion, do you give her enzymes? The haggard appearance and weight loss you described could be, among other things, lack of nutrients being absorbed. Absolutely just a guess, but i'll throw it out there.
All of my dogs are getting Nzymes.
