Default Hogan had a Femoral Head Excision today...

Hi guys! So today we travelled 20 miles to the surgeon for a consultation. The surgeon was called Ian and was lovely, he watched Hogie walk around amd he said straight away he would need surgery. So he quoted us a hip replacement which was a whopping £4000! But he said as he's a pug he will do well with a femoral head excision which is where they take off the top of the bone. That was quoted as £800 which was so much better! We thought we would have to book him in but he said he had a slot open today so we went for it! Luckily they are taking the money straight from our insurer :). So we picked my boy up at half 6 and he was shaking with pain :( but was happy to see us. He keeps forgetting he has a bad leg, he stood on my lap in the car and cried out so loud! He slept the whole way back bless him and has been dopey all night. He was really hungry and had to pee approx 4 litres hehe, hes now in his crate and im hoping he will be a bit better tomorrow. Anyone gone through this sort of thing? Could do with some tips on making him more comfortable. Here are some lovely yet heartbreaking pics. (sorry if theres any spelling mistakes, im typing on my phone and it wont let me scroll up! Lol)

    Mummy im all hurty :(

    Heres his incision

Heres a nice photo of him yesterday in his fave snoozing position :p

And one of the only pics of us :) bit off as i had to take it :p

Poor baby, I'm glad he's getting lots of TLC.

I wish your Vet had put a morphine patch where he had shaved the leg.

Rosie had one after her throat surgery and we never had any indication she was in any pain.

    Did you get pain medication?

My Marty had both hips done, about six weeks apart. It is a very painful surgery. You can help him walk by putting a towel or small blanket under his belly/flanks and use it to help support him when he needs to walk for a while. Keep up on the pain meds and make sure to add some pumpkin to his food because the pain meds, along with the surgery pain will cause constipation. If you have other dogs, cats, small children, etc. keep them away from him because even a small jostle will be very painful.

It took about two weeks for Marty to get back to using his leg. You will want to be extra vigilant to ensure your little guy is kept very slim, the lighter weight the dog, the better.

Now Marty runs and jumps like nothing ever happened to him.

    Take care,
    Lisa

BTW - Marty was fitted with a pain patch and he still was in pain, your guy must be in agony, poor fellow.

No pain patch??? Maybe your own vet can give you one if needed!!

How lucky to be able to get it done and over with!!! Less time to worry that way!!!

I see him healing nicely and back to his running self very soon!

Normally the bandage on the foreleg is where the catheter was. The pain patch would be on the body on a shaved area they are about 2 or 3 inches square looks like this. If you haven't been given any pain relieving medicine and you have no patch, I'd call the Vet tomorrow and ask him about it because dogs who are not in pain, heal and recover much faster. There's no need for an animal to be in pain these days. Hope your baby feels better soon.
