    Default New pug questions

    Hi there everyone.

Myself and my partner have, about two hours ago, taken our very first pug home! She's 8 weeks old tomorrow, and is proving to be a right handful already! We've just got a couple of questions we'd like to ask, just to ease our minds!

    1) How do you tell if a pug is too cold? We know that it's important for pugs to keep warm, but we've set her crate up in a room that is a bit chilly to us, so we've no idea what it's like for her! We've wrapped her up in a blanket, but she's already managed to wrangle her way out of it, and is sleeping on top of it now. She doesn't feel cold to us, but we're not sure!

    2) We've set her crate up in the bathroom - we've got 6 cats as well, and we don't think it's good to introduce her to them just yet! We've read advice that we should put the crate in a room where there's stuff going on so that she doesn't feel isolated, but that wouldn't really work here; do you think this might be an issue? We are going to be constantly checking on her - myself and my partner have VERY different sleeping patterns, so she shouldn't be alone for long!

    3) Should we leave the water in her crate overnight, or should we take it out and put it back in the morning?

Thanks in advance for your help!

first of all, hello & welcome!!

    1. If your pug is cold, you'll know. She'll shiver and, if she has blankets, she wont hesitate to crawl underneath. Just a warning, once she learns that she gets cuddles for shivering, you'll never know what's real or fake! lol
    2. It might take some time for her to get used to being in a crate, just make sure you give her treats for going in the crate, etc. Eventually, once she's used to sleeping in the crate she won't mind where she is. (another warning: once she's pottytrained she'll probably take over the bed)
    3. Definitely leave water in her crate overnight so she doesn't become dehydrated.

Hi, I thought I answered this!!! Welcome to the Village....

Am I misunderstanding this? I hope so! The crate is in the bathroom away from the cats. When does she come out to play? The crate is a good thing...but dogs are not like cats!! I know you're supposed to do that with kittens or new cats...but not dogs! The crate is for sleeping...for when you're not home...or for a time out.....Dogs are not like cats and need their people! She's used to a litter....and needs to bond to the two of you! She needs to be with you and protected from the cats and them from her til she settles! You might want to gate areas off so that those are safe zones for the cats....and they can get away from the pup...

She needs to eat 3 times a day...and I don't feed after 8 at night so that I can play with my pup and they can poop before bed!

Mine usually sleep the entire night and have a clean cage at night. I do not leave water.....My older guys all sleep with me and they don't leave the bed to drink....and I don't get up to drink. It's available all other times tho.

Good luck to you! With patience....your pup will be accepted by the cats...or they'll learn to get away from her and ignore her!
