... and it's good news. After the obligatory "Oh my gosh! Look at that face! And he's so slim!" the vet (one we've never seen before - it's a huge AAHA practice and I just took the first appointment I could, never mind with who), he did a good check of Leto's entire hind end and back. He said with the history of having a bad landing 2 days ago, being sound the next day, then playing at the park yesterday and coming up lame again 48 hours after the original injury, he said it's most likely a strained muscle or at worst a slight strain. His physical exam turned up pretty much the same as mine () except today there was less thickening in the lower leg and absolutely no pain on range of motion or palpation of any joint (probably thanks to the aspirin). Ligaments are all good.
He agreed that pain sensation may be a little impaired, but probably not too badly - we would know for sure if he was in a lot of pain. The problem, we agreed, is that his 'bad' left hind doesn't have the strength or coordination to make up for the sore right, so he winds up flopped in a heap on the floor, unable/unwilling to get up. The leg itself isn't as bad as it seems.
So he's on Deramaxx for 4 or 5 days, and no pugtonas. I'll have to get the old pen out of the basement -- we can restrict his movement ourselves when we're here, but he'll have to be somewhat confined away from Wally when we're not here so they don't play. I don't want to crate him, because I want him to walk a little bit - enough to keep all the joints moving.
That was scary - if one of these guys gets sick for real I'll be a basket case!!!

ahh well that's good news, my diagnosis was a bit off though, I was thinking it was the tendon that might be inflamed not the muscle, back to lectures for me! :P
good to know he's going to be ok though :)

I'm not convinced that it's the muscle. I can't feel any heat, swelling or knots in the muscle at all. If it's a muscle, it's pretty deep. I think the decreased inflammation and lack of heat over the tendon today was because of the aspirin last night, not because it isn't the injury. To me, the lack of passive and active ROM extending the digits fits more for a tendon injury (as opposed to difficulty or pain with actively moving the knee and hock, where the bulk of the muscle lies and acts). Your opinion was bang on given my description.

I hate it when one of mine doesn't feel good or is in pain so I know how you must feel. Hoping the meds and rest does the trick.
