Milo goes to the vet Monday because I am pretty sure he has ear mites. He has the black stuff in his ear that the mites leave behind. I only saw him scratch his ear once so I didn't take much notice. Last night he actually sat still for more than two seconds because he was tired haha, and I got a good look in his ear. I wonder how he got the mites since he hasn't been outside yet and we have only had him for a week. Does this mean he had them when we adopted him? I read that it takes three weeks for the mites to turn to adults. Since we are seeing the residue, I assume he has had them for awhile now.
I imagine the vet will give us drops for the mites. Our other dog's ears are very clean, so I will just keep an eye on him. Is there an ear wash or something that is good as a prevention? I want to put both dogs on Advantage multi for fleas, heartworm and mites, but I need to wait for my other dog to have a heartworm test next month when he is due for his shots first. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't allow everything to be done at once unless it's an emergency. It is still winter here so fleas and heartworms are not such an issue yet :)

It could be wax...It's a really good thing to have him checked first to know what you're dealing with.
Lisa posted a mixture that you can use once you know what it is!
Please let us know what the vet says.
Thanks, I am having him checked Monday for sure. Its really dark brown, almost black gunk only in one ear. I cleaned it out the best I could with a cotton ball dipped in diluted vinegar then I put a couple drops of olive oil in his ear. These were the best home remedies I could find until I get him checked. Our other dog, Chewy, had mites as a puppy and that is what it looked like. I will let everyone know what the vet says :)
Good luck!!!

Milo just got back from the vet and he was a good boy! The vet doesn't think it is mites unless we are just catching the start of it. She put him on a dose of Revolution just in case since Revolution kills ear mites among other things. He had his shots, wormer and nails trimmed. I am glad he is a healthy boy, although he only has one testicle right now haha. She also thinks that his stenotic nares are not too bad and he may outgrow it. She is usually hesitant to preform surgery unless its an extreme case. Her best advice to to make sure we keep his weight down and never let him get overheated. I intend to prevent those things anyway. :)
Glad to hear that Milo had a healthy checkup and his ears are fine.
