    Default New pup - worms

We got our new black pug on Monday the 11th and immediately got him to the vet for shots and dewormer. They gave him the liquid kind and gave us another dose of it to give him 10 days after he took that one. Pretty much every time he poops, he has a couple worms pass through with it. Tonight I took him out and this time there were quite a few, I'd say about eight of them on it this time. Is the higher than normal number of them alarming or is it pretty random during this time. It's freaking the wife out and until she can call the vet in the morning, she'll never rest! ;) Pup is eating and drinking well and even at times wants more. No throwing up and just recently have seen him scratching his butt around itching as well as trying to itch back there himself although he cannot reach. She's also worried because my sister bought the brother of the one we have from the same person but the vet gave her a pill version for dewormer and she's thinking they gave us something different. Any reassurance for her is welcomed.

Did the breeder give the pup any dewormer before this or is this the first dose? I know I saw worms with Buddy when he was about 12 weeks old. He also had some digestive issues at that time. When I took him to the vet, she said it was unusual to actually see the worms and that this meant that he had a larger load of them in his system than is usual. She gave him a broad spectrum dewormer to kill all types and we haven't seen anything since.

Do you know which worms the dewormer goes after? Not all dewormers kill all worms. The other thing is trying to figure out what kind of worms you are seeing to make sure you are treating for those. One thing to be careful of...roundworms can be transmitted to people and can cause all kinds of health issues...so be sure to clean up any poop well, don't leave any in the yard because the larvae can apparently last for years in the ground. Not to freak you out...just to be cautious!

If you know you are treating for whatever worms the pup has, then the dewormer should take care of it. We have been doing a monthly deworming as Buddy is six months now...so far so good! Good luck! It is pretty gross to see them so I can relate to your wife! LOL

Your breeder should have been de-worming your pup from 2 weeks on. My litters get a de-wormer called Nemex at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age and then their vet SHOULD prescribe de-wormer again at 12 and 16 weeks of age and after that you should not need a de-wormer more than once a year unless there is a problem. Worms in puppies is normal and they are usually born with them and get them from the mom (even though we de-worm our adults as well) However, never should you actually SEE the worms unless this pup is just infested with them. Personally, I would take a stool and worm sample with me and head to the vet to have them look at it to make sure you are on the right de-wormer. I would suggest your sister does the same with her puppy if she is also seeing worms in the feces.

Wish I could have given you more "restful" suggestions, but that is the best I can do. Best of luck to you all and please keep us posted.

Yes, with Buddy it was 2,4,6,8,10,12 weeks of age and then monthly until six months. I believe this was because we were seeing worms in his stool. I think we will likely do an annual deworming after this next one but we'll see how it goes. We have a child at home so I don't really want to take any risks with worms around here!

Ok, she called the vet and basically what i thought they'd say, that it's normal and actually good that so many came out cause that means the meds are working and pushing them out. He actually went this morning and none at all were in this round. The vet also said the reason we didn't get a liquid and pill version of the meds is because of his size. Even though he is eight weeks, he was the runt and is still on the small side but he's doing fine!

    Hi...
I have been in panic mode since I de-wormed my puppy this morning and Dexter has passed 4 very long white worms.
Apparently the bredder wormed my puppy once at 6 wks (which is not good enough Grrrr).
I can't get into the vet until monday.
This information has been very helpful......

I bought my pug and tok her to the vet for an upper respiratory infection (first grr), then she had worms coccidia and round worms and tape worms (2nd grr). Found out the breeder had not had them dewormed. So I was pretty nary. THEN she had some yeast in her ears which is the beginning of an ear infection. i get that puppies have issues but I was a bit angry that the breeder didn't do a better job. She also had eye ulcers which the breeder didn't tell me. I asked why her eyes were cloudy and she said se had something in her eyes and gave me the ointment. So i completely understand being a little weary. but her worms are gone and everything has been taken care of. Make sure you clean all the poop from the yard since that can spread it around more.

And this is only one reason we stress the importance of dealing with reputable breeders.

I wish I had known then what I know now. But honestly, I am so glad to have this little spitfire. Thats why we waited until we knew we would have the money to pay the vet bills and give her good care. For these situations.
