5Likes I have an 8 year old fawn pug. Sidda has always been healthy until here in the last month or so. His belly and the backs of his backlegs up to his tail are turning black. Hes seems to be scratching quite abit and making some sores here and there. His weight has also decreased, not drastically but enough that its noticeable. We just recently got a new puppy, and I wasnt sure if that would have an effect on him or not! The vets around here doesnt seem to know what to do for him:/ Any help would be muchly appreciated
Does his skin have a yucky smell to it?
What type of food is he on?

When we got Audrey poor Smartie went into a bit of a decline for a few days and lost weight. We were quite worried and took her to the vet who gave her a vitamin B12 shot. Once smartie got used to the puppy she was fine and soon started to put on weight again. We made sure she had time away from the puppy and had lots of time with us. When our second puppy (Noah) arrived she was fine!

When we got our Izabella, she had black skin on her tummy, a sign of yeast overgrowth. We found that with a grainfree diet and limiting her carb intake, her tummy is almost all pink now. She also had been itching, and had a yeast infection in her ears. That has now all cleared up.
I posted some pictures a few days ago chronicling her progress. I think I called it Pink Belly Progress.
Thanks for all your help guys:0) His skin doesnt really have an odor, and hes been on the same brand of dog food for 2 years and it has never seemed to bother him! Is there in over the counter shampoos I can get to help the yeast heal faster. The poor dear is miserable and hes scratched some of the places so much that they are beginning to bleed=/ Not only am I attached to this puggy puppy, but my 3 year old daughter is too so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Here is a photo of my Sidda and Layne:0)![]()
Geat picture, they're both beautiful!
My Beefy started having yeast problems after a two years of being on the same food (Innova Evo)... he's been struggling with it ever since. I wish I had some good advice on what would help get rid of it.
As far as shampoos, avoid anything with oatmeal. I recently bought some Malaseb (or you can try Mal-a-ket) and that is an antifungal and antibacterial. They need baths twice a week for the first few weeks and let the lather soak on them for 10 minutes.
Definitely make sure you're limiting carbohydrates and not feeding grains.
You'll also want to watch his tummy where he scratched it raw as you don't want it to become infected!

Thank you so very much for your advice:0) I picked up some Adams Skin Medication for dogs with 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole in it for the open wounds and some Pro-Pet Antibacterial/Antifungal/Antimicrobial shampoo for the actual yeast! I sure hope thatll get rid of it:0) And I picked up a different brand of dog food too so maybe thatll help as well!
I work rescue and we often get in dogs with black and itchy skin, everything said above is correct, you want the dog on a diet high in fat and protein, very low in carbs. No grains, rice, potato, sweet potato or tapioca. This eliminates may, actually most, kibbles, look for a good frozen raw, dehydrated raw, freeze-dried raw, canned, or one of the few low carb kibbles like Orijen 6 fish or Epigen 90.

Go online and get yourself some pure, organic Neem Oil and some powdered neem bark.
Neem Tree Farms - Quality Neem Products - All-Natural Neem for People, Pets andPlants
Sprinkle the neem bark powder on his food and apply the neem oil to the blackened and raw places on his skin...daily, twice a day if you can bear it. I say that because neem oil smells bad, like a mixture of peanut butter and garlic, but it works wonders for the skin. Do not feed the neem oil, only the bark powder.
Our rescue has discovered the incredible results that neem oil can give and we are using a lot less drugs and chemical shampoos and dips and flea treatments. Neem also kills and repels fleas and demodex mites. It is totally safe for you, the dog and your family and is wonderful for human skin as well. Too bad it smells so bad.
Take care,
Lisa
