She's acting normal today, but we have a vet appointment tomorrow.

Keep an eye on her and if she's still acting weird....or does it again tonight...she needs to go to the vet.

    Might be explosive diarrhea???

My friend had a pug that screamed in her sleep and acted weird...it was a form of seizure.

    Seeing your girl being fine!
I don't know what anal glands smell like, but it's what I imagine it would smell like.

Anal gland juice - once smelt, never forgotten. It is a sort of metallic, fishy smell.

If they have a startle or are upset about something you can sometimes get squirted with "bum juice". Snifter did it to me the first time I tried to cut his nails. Toddy regularly does it to the vet. I wonder whether she may have had a startle in her sleep; Toddy sometimes comes screaming out of his bed from a deep sleep and he usually then tries to attack Snifter. He gets over it very quickly, though. I think getting the vet to look her over is probably wise though I am glad all appears well today.

So it was anal glands. Penelope had them decompressed at the vet. However, the vet said that they didn't appear to be infected. She couldn't explain Penelope's odd behavior when they excreted. I have never seen such terror. I hope it never happens again.

    Here is my theory:

Sometimes the anal glands get "chunks" in them, debris from the liquid. Perhaps Penelope had a "chunk" that blocked the gland. As fluid built up, the pressure grew and when she relaxed and slept, it finally burst through, possibly causing considerable pain. The dog woke from the pain, smelled the unfamiliar stench (and for some reason anal gland leakage disturbs most dogs, they will try to lick it away and often look humiliated when they leak it), looked up and saw you and the association was made between your arrival and the painful situation. She thought you must have caused her butt to hurt and stinky stuff to come out of it.

I would make sure she is on a diet that creates very firm poop, with low amounts of carbohydrates, to minimize future anal gland issues and I would trust that she is a dog, they live in the day and don't hold grudges long. She will soon come to trust you again and forget about the "bad-mommy-owie-stinky-butt" episode.

    Take care,

This reminds me of a dog I had years ago, a beautiful red husky with the husky love to roam and wander. We had horses, a shetland pony and a pygmy goat who were in a horse wire pasture. We had three strands of hot wire running along the fence, top to discourage cribbing or chewing the wooden top rail, center to keep them from rubbing and scratching on the wire and bottom to keep the goat from rubbing.

I had the horses all out of the pasture being groomed. The gate was open and the pony and goat were happily playing in the pasture. The husky decided he would investigate the pasture while we were occupied with the horses and might try to play wolf with the little goat. We looked up to see the dog chase the little goat, and the pony chase the dog (the pony and goat were buds). The dog got worried and ran up to the corner of the pasture, turned and faced the charging pony who stopped a few feet from him. The dog backed up into the lower hot wire strand and was zapped. He yelped but just backed up into the wire more as he associated the pain with the pony, not the wire. I had to run and shut off the wire. That dog remained terrified of that little pony as long as we had her. The little pony trotted away to her goat neck arched and tail flagged so full of herself she was nearly bursting with pride.

    Take care,

All was well and forgiven yesterday. I'm glad dogs don't hold grudges long.
