Can someone please tell me what just happened?

Keep in mind that the fist few things happened within seconds. Penelope was sleeping in her crate across from me on the couch. All of a sudden I smell this foul odor. I walked toward the cage to see if she had pooped in her cage. She woke up and started screaming like crazy, cowering away from me. I noticed a spray of brown fluid outside of her cage. I let her out of the cage and she continued to cower from me and scream. I called my husband out of the bedroom. She went to him and continued to look afraid of me. Her tail was between her legs. I tried to lift up her tail and she wouldn't let me. I took her outside to go to go pee and she just wanted to walk back to the house. She didn't pee like she usually does. Her tail remains between her legs. She is now in her cage. She is still acting afraid of me.

like a bloody fish smell?? her anal glands??

Keep an eye on her and if she's still acting weird....or does it again tonight...she needs to go to the vet.

Might be explosive diarrhea???

My friend had a pug that screamed in her sleep and acted weird...it was a form of seizure.

I was thinking the same thing sounds like infected anal glands or a seizure that caused diarhea...
We fostered a Liver Shunt Pup that had accidents during seizures and always seemed lethargic and disoriented afterwards, sadly he crssed the rainbow bridge just shy of one year old but he was loved by many :)
I would get her checked by a vet, Anal glad infections can be painful and may need antibiotics

I'd call the vet asap and ask if they think you should bring her in. It does sound as if it might be the anal glands.

Tail down and behaviour like that is a bad sign regardless of the brown stuff. She's uncomfortable and possibly in pain. I would get her to the vet ASAP. Good luck - hope it's nothing serious.
