Where would I shop for psyllium husks? Is that a shoprite item, or more of a specialty store purchase?
How funny that many pugs seem to have this fetid issue going on. Guess it's part of their charm.![]()
I have also heard that manually expressing perpetuates the problem. However, if I don't manually express my golden, he will randomly drop and drag his rear, wherever he is. He's a therapy dog, so when he scoots across the lobby of a nursing home in front of many people, it's beyond embarrassing!
How often does Jules release his glands?
With Gizmo, I swear it's several times a day. He'll be laying on my lap or by my side, and all of the sudden, there's a whiff of the stinky stuff, and he'll jump up, start sniffing, turn around, and lick at the spot where his but just was. Today, he's done this about 4 times!
Do you think he needs to have them expressed manually? I asked my vet if he should have his glands expressed when I went in for his initial "meet the vet" appointment two weeks ago, and she said she doesn't do it unless the dog indicates there's a problem (by scooting, licking, etc.). She said expressing them manually makes the glands fill up faster. Gizmo never acts like they're bothering him, but I'm concerned with how frequently this is happening!

It sounds like he might have a problem that the vet needs to look at, if he's doing it that often. Rugby has to have hers manually expressed at the vet's about once a month. I tried to learn how to do it myself by squeezing them, & my daughter, who is a vet assistant, tried it, too, but she couldn't do it that way--it requires the "finger treatment" by the vet & huh uh, I'm not doin' that! Poor Rugby had hers rupture several years ago--I know that HURT! First, one got all swollen & I took her to the vet who said that it was going to rupture, & sure enough. She was on antibiotics, then about a month later, the one on the other side ruptured. I can't do anything different with her diet, now, because she's on a strict diet due to crystals & bladder stones. I just try & take her to the vet on a fairly regular basis now....![]()

Honestly I'm really scared of this! LOL
Might need to start feeding her pumpkin now!!
I've been giving Ozzy pumpkin at 2 of his 3 meals for about 2 months and about 2 weeks ago started adding 1/4 tsp of psyllium husks as well, and Ozzy still leaks a small amount from his anal sacs. I have a feeling it is just how he is built and I think this is just how it's gonna be unless someone has a remedy for me out there, without surgery.
His poops are really nice and firm but still the little leaks occur.
