Default Reverse Sneezing or Something More?

I know that my 10 year old pug, Schwanson, has frequent fits of reverse sneezing.

However, the past few days, his wheezing is worse and much more frequent.

The wheezing sounds more "hollow" than before and it seems to be happening more when he is breathing.

I attempted to get it on video (sorry for the sidewaysness). He does it at 1:06, 1:56, but 2:24 is the most clear sound.

Awww....poor old fellow. That doesn't sound like normal reverse sneezing. I would consider that more of a cough or wheezing. Given his age this could be an early sign of something serious like a tumor or congestive heart failure or it may just be something as innocuous as an allergy or a touch of kennel cough. I would say this would be a good time to take him in for a senior check up with bloodwork and show them the video. They may want to do a set of x-rays to check his lungs and trachea.

I hope it's nothing serious and your sweet old man is back to normal soon.

    Take care,

Schwanson's wheezing has gotten worse and more frequent through the night. I am taking him to the vet today. I hope it is nothing serious... Poor guy has been through so much already.

    Here is another video.

Please let us know how the vet appt goes and I would recommend getting an x-ray done. Sophie makes those noises and then acts as if she is trying to throw something up. It is a wheezing sound and loud "honking". It turned out that she has a collapsed trachea. She takes some meds when it acts up, but for the most part her episodes are controllable and have not been serious. Only once, before we knew what it was, she passed out from it when she was a puppy. We rushed her to the vet thinking it was a seizure.

They were able to tell what it was after we had an x-ray done, but we had several visits before they did the x-ray.

I don't see him honking or trying to vomit to clear his throat, so it may not be that but it would probably be a good idea to have an x-ray to check if you can.

Please keep us posted! It's heart breaking when our babies don't feel well....

what a calm old man he is... looking for the update... the sound is way more piggish (I can't tell if it's inhale or out, even)... than the kind of gasping throat sound of a reverse sneeze to me... in rev sneezes my pugs jaws seems to lock closed, but their lips open in a kind of smile/grimace as they seek to inhale/exhale...

Thanks, everyone. As I said, Schwanson got worse as the day went on. He went to the vet yesterday evening. She said that it must be bronchitis, but if he was still "coughing" on Monday that he should have an x-ray as it could be a collapsed trachea. He was given some Temaril-P tabs to take every 8-12 hours. I am not sure if it is helping him any.

This really sounds like Schwanson. He has always done the wheezing then hacking actions, and now this?

I don't feel comfortable with this diagnosis of bronchitis. Not that I don't trust my vet, but I'm really sensitive when it comes to my pets. In 2009, I knew something wasn't right with my 8 year old cat. I took her in for a full-checkup (this was with a different vet) and was told she was healthy. But over the course of two weeks, her health rapidly degraded until she lost all function in her body. It turned out that she had cancer. I am so worried because I can't handle something happening to Schwanson... :(
