Exclamation HELP!!! 7 month old puggy in heat

    Hi all,

    I need a little advice. I have a 7month old puggy, Poppy.
She is on her 9th day of her first heat and I am starting to worry a little....was wondering if other pug lovers have had the same or similar experiences.
Poppy is a major food lover, and for the last few days she has gone completely off her food, all foods; furthermore all she does is sleep and is a sooky. But, other thing I believe is a little strange is the fishy odour coming from her rear end. Im not sure if these symptoms are normal, with past experiences of other breeds this isn't....but I know pugs are a whole lot different to other dogs!!!

Please help me, all! Poppy and I will be forever grateful.

Hi & If your Poppy is having bleeding, could that be what you are smelling? Or the most common cause of what we all know here as "Fishy Butt," are those pesky anal glands. Sometimes those need to be expressed. Our Pug, Rugby, has lots of issues with hers, so needs a trip to the vet about once a month or so. I don't know if I'd mess with that tho, until she is out of heat....guess if it was me, I'd at least be putting in a phone call to my vet to see if she thought I'd need to bring my dog in....especially since she went off her feed, too. Don't remember that much about having dogs in heat, but I think Rugby did go into heat earlier than I figured she would (around 7 months, too), so I hadn't gotten her spayed yet. And she went in while we were on vacation in our old motorhome! I do remember she got very grouchy, tho! We had to keep her under very close watch, the floors were a stinky mess, she was extra cranky & smelly...then we had to wait until she was totally out of heat before the vet could spay her.

Are you going to have Poppy spayed? She'll be a better pet if you do! And pictures! We LOVE pictures!

I don't recognize the symptoms except the smell. It's normal for them to emit a certain smell while in heat. I think you should call your vet about the non eating and tiredness. They can get dangerous infections so better be on the safe side. Have you checked her temp?

It's probably nothing...but....I'd have her checked.

Some females smell terrible when in heat! Others only have smells that other dogs can smell.

The fishy smell could be her anal glands and if it's continuous she might have an infection there!

While a bitch can be moody.......they usually still eat, etc!

I'd have her at the vet just for a check!

Thanks all for your advice. Poppy's behaviour has turned around, I think its a case of being a little bit overdramatic. She's a pro at that...I did talk to the vet and they said that if she had a temperature, it is a different story but because she does not it is just a matter of monitoring her behaviour and keeping her hydrated. Thankyou all...ps. photos of Poppy coming soon!
