We have had Jack for six months now. He eats very healthy, no treats, nothing.
Ten days ago he started to vomit and had runny poop. Off to our Vet.
She thought maybe he had picked up something while he had been at the groomers
around the other dogs. So, she started him on Metronidazole 250mg, 1/2 tablet twice a day.
She gave him two shots and off we went. For a few days he was fine, had lost a few pounds,
but seemed okay. Yesterday around noon full blown vomit, poop flew out. I called the Vet and she did a complete blood panel.
Within an hour we had the results. Pancreatitis. I couldnt believe it. So, she changed his diet to Hills Prescription Diet i/d. Three small meals a day. I read quite a bit about this and if anyone has any tips please share them with me. I have never had a dog with this and frankly this has scared me. He had a good night last night and was anxious for his morning meal.

Marty had a mild bout of pancreatitis when he was about a year old. We put him on a diet, and improved his quality of food. He has had either Ziwipeak or Orijen since and never had a problem again. Some say that foods rich in fats, like ZP and Orijen will cause attacks, but he has been wonderful on it. For the first year of his life, we gave him Eukanuba weight control, which is much lower quality. But back then we didn't know better.
Take care,
Lisa

Toddy had pancreatitis after his gallbladder eruption. It was fairly mild, and expected. They put him on Zantac and something else for a few days and advised feeding little and often. They did not suggest a particularly low fat diet at that stage, because he is not on a very high fat diet as it is (12%) but did say that if it continued we may have to look at diet again.

Thanks everyone! I wonder why she didnt have me put him on Zantac? Just a change in his diet and to call if anything changed. Is this something that he will have to live with the rest of his life? She squeezed him in to see him yesterday and the waiting room was full. Hated to ask to many questions.

Peyton had pancreatitis a few years ago. He was on high quality food at the time - Blue Buffalo and a rotation of different canned food. The vet gave him some prescription meds (can't recall exactly what) and had him on a bland diet (cooked rice, boiled chicken or beef, that type of thing) for a couple days. We really haven't had to do anything differently long-term; after the bland diet, he went back on his regular diet and everything has been fine.
I had the same concerns you do about what the long-term situation would be. He's never had another issue with his pancreas; I don't know if that's how things usually go, but that's been our experience. The vet did say that we caught it very early and that definitely helped.
Our vet didn't feel it was necessary to put him on a Rx diet, so you may eventually be able to move off that. I'm not familiar with the ingredients in Hills' food; you might want to check on that. I know the Royal Canin Rx food has ingredients in it that I'd never want to feed my boys.
Good luck to you and Jack!
No advice, but I hope he feels better soon!!
