Default A barf in the morning :(

Well, 4th time this year Mz Tilly woke me to let me know she needed to barf. It's probably only the 8th barf in her 8 years. So barf she did on her napping blanket because I being sleepy didn't connect the dots. no dinner in it, just yellow bile. Just the 1 barf, not multiple. Got her cleaned up, took her out and she did her business. She didn't eat her breakfast, not even the topper. And she hasn't drank water (yech,,,doesn't want to wash out the barf). She's acting mostly OK otherwise. snoozin next to me but has a bit of a rasp and a little runny nose.

The only thing different was she had part of a jumbone treat. I had bought these when I was searching for treat she would eat. Junkfood for dogs - she loves them. I'm wondering if these are the cause. If my memory is right these barfs have been after eating them, but not positive.

So does she get a full workup of tests looking for a cause that may have been barfed up, or let it slide. Typical parent indicision....when to call in the doctor.

I'd monitor her and not offer food again until dinner time. Then make it bland and a small portion. The "go to" chicken and rice is good. In the meantime try to get her to drink a little water to make sure she can keep it down. If she can't then go to the vet today.

If she can keep water down and eats the bland food and keeps that down, then I'd stick to bland food again tomorrow and then see how she goes. If she does not eat the bland food or cannot keep it down then I would have her at the vet. You might want to make a tentative appointment for tomorrow so you can get in at a convenient time, which you can always cancel if it is a false alarm

    Hope she's better soon.

I second what Bella said about having her drink some water...I'd heard adding some chicken broth to the water might make her drink...

    Hope she feels better soon!

Definitely see if she'll drink, then try boiled chicken and rice. It's times like these I wish they could talk to tell you how they feel!Hope it was the "junkfood" and Mz Tilly is feeling better later today.

No more Jumbones. Give her a raw marrow bone to chew from now on. No processed crap.

See if you can wrap a 1/4 of a Tagamet or 1/2 of a Zantac up in a little bit of wonderful food and get her to take it. if she keeps it down and seems hungry in a couple hours feed her, but only a half portion.

If she continues having these incidences after eliminating the Jumbones...then consider giving her 1/4 of a Tagamet at bedtime and another in the morning before feeding. She may make too much acid which upsets her stomach. Tagamet won't hurt her and has some anti-mast cell tumor properties, so it's not a bad thing for an older or middle-aged dog to be on anyway.

Give her a hug for me.

    Take care,

Well she did drink a bit this morning. Never ate - came home to dried up topping and untouched food. She did her business outside, nothing abnormal with it. She was hungry and ate the toppings and then started to eat the rest when a carefully constructed stack of drying utensils came crashing down and she headed for the hills. Now she is out in the kitchen begging food from housemate. Her begging consists of sitting front and center while preperations are underway then sitting and staring at you while you at. Though she will paw at him for tidbits, something she doesn't do with me.

So, she is acting normal again. I am taking a different blanket up to the bed tonight, if she is going to do this it's best not on the big blanket. I am still amazed she wakes me before barfing.

No barf this morning. She ate all her breakfast and is now watching the morning news. She never did fiinish her dinner, instead she begged for treats and I was meany and withheld...ok, one duck puck, but that's it, I swear! When she dances it's so difficult to hold your ground.

Thanks everyone for the excellent advice and well wishes.
