Hi all! Ellie is in for surgery today! She is getting spayed, stenotic nares, those saccules things removed (sorry, I've been up since 6, and didn't get to sleep until 2 last night..), and her palate done. I am nervous as can be right now, and happy that we are getting this done! My boyfriend drove her down there today, round trip took him just about 2 hours. I Did my best not to show sadness, fear or cry when putting her in the truck, I smiled, told her I loved her, be a good girl and I'd see her soon...then after they pulled away, I cried! LOL When Steve (boyfriend) got home, he said she was really good for them, and kept trying to sneak into the middle seat of the truck to snuggle with him while he was driving lol
I should be hearing from the vet sometime today.I'll update more when I know more. I am letting her stay there overnight. I figure she is safer there. If something came up in the middle of the night while she is here, we just couldn't do it, and with me home with all 4 kids, to try and load them all up and keep Ellie calm if her breathing is bad to get her to the vet would be a nightmare. It was a pro's vs con's deal, although I will miss her dearly, I know it was best to let her stay.
So, with all this stuff getting done, I know I can expect a very groggy puggy tomorrow. I know to feed soft foods, liquid meds from the vet. I have never had a female dog who has been spayed before, will she need to be carried down the steps to go potty? Sorry if this is a silly question. I know to try and keep her calm and quiet...I'll be doing my best. We just got our yard fenced in yesterday, *after 5 years of needing one!!!!* so I can send my kids outside to play and she can relax, although she is my shadow and is happiest with me. I have told my kids no friends over for about a week to try and keep it more mellow in the house. For those who don't know, I have a 5, 3, 2, 1yr old kids. I have told the older two who can understand, that Ellie is getting a lot of surgeries done, they watched the soft palate surgery on youtube, (They wanted to see what she was getting done) and so they KNOW they need to be VERY gentle with her. Its my youngest 2 are still learning to be gentle consistently.
Is there anything else I can do for Ellie to make her recovery time go smoothly? I am just so on edge...I only have had her two months...and I just am dying inside not being able to be there with her. Not being there when she does wake up, and not having her home asap. Any good vibes, prayers or happy pug thoughts would be appreciated!!!
Heres a link to the previous thread I posted, just in case someone is researching all this stuff like I had....or is curious of the back story :)
Elongated palate surgery, have you done it?
Sending Ellie good Pug vibes and hoping she heals beautifully and quickly!
You might want to keep her crated for the first few days and only let her out to do her business. She won't like it but it will help her heal better if she remains still and quiet for a few days, post surgery.

Prayers her surgeries are uncomplicated and she has a speedy recovery. Sounds like the crate is going to be best for her to rest and keep the little ones away from her.Update us when you hear from your vet.

The spay and nares surgery are very easy, however the palate and saccules is what requires calm and quiet, post-surgery. There can be swelling if she gets too active, barks, gets stressed, etc. If she is accustomed to the crate and accepts it without a lot of stress that is a good spot for her with stuffed kongs or raw bones (too big to eat) which she can chew on to keep her mind busy. If she cries in the crate or gets stressed by being confined, a cool, darkened bedroom might be better. If any confinement stresses her a lot, then I would keep the little ones separated from her for a few days with gates and playpens. Stress to the olders that getting her excited and playful is not good for a while, that they should let her sleep and help to keep her calm for a few days.
Take care,
Lisa

I got a call, about her bloodwork being done before doing the surgery. Her red blood count was low...made the mistake of googling it LOL I did find one that would make sense for her and isn't a big deal and praying thats what it is!!! Apparently the RBC live 120days, and will be lowered if there was a parasite infection, she came to us with hookworm and whipworm...so I am praying its just that she hasn't created new healthy RBCs :) She has been here about 60 days...so that could be it...I am so freaking out right now LOL They said if they see it being a problem they would call me before doing the surgery, or if not a problem, would go ahead and call when its done...

Poor little thing. Thats alot to do at 1 time. I feel for you, 4 children all under 5, and you gotta keep them quiet and calm. Maybe spread out the puzzles, coloring books and crayons. Plan on some baking with the kids, or make some play dough. I am trying to think of ideas for you to keep these littles quiet. When I had my daycare, crafts was always a big hit to keep the kids quiet and busy. Best of luck to you, and many healthy wishes for Ellie.

Wonderful advice above.....take a deep breath and know that all will be well ({{Raynebowpug}}} and {{{Ellie}}}
Thanks for the ideas of stuff with the kids :) the big hit right now with them in the yard, and being outside ALL day! I made 8' by 4' designated mud digging area for the kids, complete with the sandbox turtle who now gets filled with water to make it super muddy*got the idea for the digging area from a dog training book for dogs who can't stop digging, figure they got their area for digging, I can have grass in the rest of the yard LOL*
I don't have a kennel for Ellie, but she does like sleeping under the computer desk when I am using it, so I'll figure out a way to keep the kids from bugging her. So long as the weather holds out and stays 60*+ I can bring them out to the yard and have them burn off all the energy!
I still haven't heard anything from them yet...been 5 hours since I got a call about the blood work...kind of wondering whats going on...I know I am probably being overly paranoid...I don't know if I should call them or not..I think I will in an hour. They close at 6, and its almost 4. I haven't had a pet of any kind go in for a big surgery before. I do not know whats normal with surgery times, or getting updates, or anything like that.
