Hi,
My poor baby's getting a mast cell tumor removed from his back on Monday. :( Have any of you had any experiences with this that you can share?
- Aaron
I haven't had any experience with mast cell but I know several people on here have.Prayers for clean margins and a good report.
Jackie,Mom to Robbie & Stacy my human children and Tinker my furkid.
Thanks!
You are hoping for clean margins and low numbers. Pathology usually takes 1-2 weeks to get back.
I recommend all dogs with a history of MCT's be on benadryl and Tagamet for life. It slows the growth and spread of any tumor that may still be there and helps prevent reoccurence. One 25mg. benadryl twice a day and 1/4 human Tagamet twice daily. I also recommend you put her on a superfood supplement as well like this one:
Green Mush
She will come back with a large incision, they need to take as much tissue surrounding the tumor as possible.
Hoping that the margins are clean and the numbers low.
Take care,
Lisa

Praying for your Puggie and for clean margins and a good report.
We never touch people so lightly that we don't leave a trace.
Update on surgery: We got clean margins. Thanks for your prayers everyone!
I'll ask the vet about keeping him on benadryl and putting him on a special diet.
Great news on the clean margins... Congrats!. When our Simba had one removed it was a grade 2 with clean margins. We did follow up with the Oncologist who recommended getting a mototic index rating done on the tumor because it was grade 2. That is a good indicator of how agressive it will be and if it will return. Anything less than 5 is awesome!. Simbas was between 1 and 3. Per the oncologist we were golden for that one.
One other bit of advice offered by the oncologist regarding Mast Cell Tumors and pugs. Our little pugs are unfortunately genetically pre-dispositioned to getting these suckers at some point in their lives. It's the nature of the breed, always scratching, very allergy prone, etc. That being said mast cell tumors in pugs are for the most part less agressive than other breeds.
Glad to hear everything went well
My Phoebe had a tumor removed two weeks ago. This was her horrendous scar.
However, her margins were clean and it was a grade 2.
Unfortunately, we aspirated another tiny bump on her neck that had been there forever and she has another one. So she is having yet more surgery tomorrow.
