Inevitable Pug Health ?

For as long as i been on this forum and just getting my puppy 3 weeks ago this forum has scared me. I know the health issues for pugs but it seems like every other thread is about some kind of surgery or problem someone is having with their pug. It scares me because it makes me think is it inevitable that my pup has some kind of problem in his young ages ? Is there anyone who has had a pug that did not have to go threw any surgeries have something removed or anything serious medical conditions ? Seems like any way i look at it my pug is bound to have something wrong with him in the future based on this forum... Just curious.

I think the bad news just seems more obvious on a forum like this. I have two pugs, and while one of them needed surgery for a luxating patella, the other is in perfect health.

It is smart to be aware of potential issues, and know the warning signs, but I don't think that pre-emptive worry about your little puppy is beneficial.

I think this is a great place to gain knowledge so you're hearing more about problems, etc because of that. I guess we need to post more pleasant day to day living events.

Don't worry - just be vigilant and if you think something is wrong get it checked out. Peyton and Bailey are now 6 and we've had very few issues and no surgeries (besides the neutering).

The few problems they've had have been things we caught early. Sometimes that makes all the difference, rather than waiting too long and then finding something that could have been treated much easier if the Pug had gone to the vet's sooner. I do keep a dog first aid book and various first-aid supplies at home, just in case. Although you can find lots of crazy stuff online, you can also find good resources (this board, WebMD for pets, etc.) to search when your little guy has a symptom you're not sure about.

The hardest part, for my guys, is weight management; if they are too heavy it can cause a slew of other issues. So we weigh their food at every feeding and make sure to always feed a high quality food.

Soon, you'll get to know what's normal for your little guy and you'll be able to easily identify when he's not feeling quite up to par.

As has been said before, quite often people join a forum like this because their pug has just been diagnosed with something and they come here looking for answers and support. Yes, pugs have certain issues that are common in the breed (such as eyes getting scratched), but keep in mind that the really scary and serious things like Pug Dog Encephalitis are, thankfully, relatively uncommon considering the huge number of pugs out in the world right now.
